Prepping plane to prime

Building pat kings Ringmaster Trainer III. Its profile with plank wing..so lots of balsa.

 Which clear dope should I use to prep the wood to prime?
 I think I read somewhere like 2 light coats of thinned dope then go ahead with the DC540.

Would it be Butyrate or Nitrate?

Not set up to spray so will have to brush it on.

I would put 3 coats of dope (either, I always use Butyrate) thinned 50%, lightly sand each coat with 360 or 400, cover it with light or medium silk-span, 3 coats of dope, lightly sand each coat, then spray primer.  I know its a trainer, but practice your finishing techniques on it.  As small as it is there is not much area to sand.  Have fun!

It is small compared to a full fuselage, 60 inch span, 680 square inch stunt plane, now that takes a whole lot of sanding!!!
