Post by: Alan Buck on April 01, 2011, 03:04:35 PM
Which polishing compound is the better to use on the types of finishes we use? I used Brodak dope with a DuPont clear 480s which is a Acrylic. Thanks

Well, I use 3M polishing compound and 3M finishing compound (both liquid) then finish off with something like Maguire's mirror glaze or similar.

I use exactly what Randy uses.

I Machine buff with a zero buffing foam Pad with Dual Action buffer.

Yup, same here. Although, I use it on Randy's recommendation. I also have some silver polishing paste that comes in handy.

Brasso after a good 2000 grit sanding, no swirl remover required.

With PPG Duracryl DCA468 acrylic lacquer I use Meguiar's #2, then #9, then #7, all by hand.  The catalyzed polyurethane requires different stuff.

Numbers # 1 and then 2 .. Never by hand - always with a Dual action buffer set to 1400 rpm for final coats.

I also use the Menzerna Final Finish PO85U which is for removing 3000 grit swirls.

Cant knock howards technique - its always front row - I just don thave that sort of time to finish a model - 4 - 6 weeks is all I want to spend.
