Title: Polish time for urethane
Post by: Clint Ormosen on February 11, 2011, 11:53:26 PM
After spraying the Tempest with auto urethane clearcoat, How long should I wait to polish it? I already leveled the finish with 1500 grit. Is it better to let the finish harden for a few days or do it now while it's soft? It's going to take a few days to accomplish the task anyway.

I have heard of guys waiting a month or more before polishing their plane.  Seen Ted Fancher polishing his while watching combat one year.  Then there are those that are still polishing until they are run out out of the room at apparance judging.  You trying to outdo your PlayBoy? H^^

Never mind. The clear is already getting too hard to buff the scratches out. I guess the answer is "less than 3 days." ::)

I'd wait until after VSC to buff it out Clint... VD~

(and this bad advice has nothing to do with the fact that we plan to be competing against each other this March in Tucson)  ;D

Generally, a couple of days is enough. The longer you wait, the harder it gets and the harder to polish out.

3 days isnt that long. It just means you might have to go longer into the process.
Several grades of Sanding / several grades of polishing / buffing. 15 - 24 hrs of solid buffing time should be all that you need.

I have chosen to wait a couple of weeks to wet sand then after that I wait again to buff it out. I use a machine .when it was dope I did a hand polish but with the Urethane I only use a machine. Works for me.

Clint,  another thing I find ,,, let's say I shoot the clear, wait 14 days & wetsand all the orange peel out with 800  I wait another 14 days & a bit of orange peel reapeers , So I wait a good while then hit it with 800 then wait again then go to 1000, 1200 1500  then buff with a machine ,Takes ma a long time for sure,   Which Tempest? Randy's , Bart's?
