Title: plastic covering over fiberglass
Post by: Bootlegger on January 20, 2017, 06:00:23 PM

How do you do this,  how well did it work?

Gil,
I have applied iron on over fiber glass with success but there are some cautions........

Use as little heat as possible so as not to warp the glass part or to soften the resin, also if you get the iron on covering too hot it will gas off badly and cause lots of bubbles between the glass and covering.  The gas has no place to go unless you prick the covering:(

Then the problem of sealing the edges........
Not sure exactly what you project involves but you must seal the edges of the covering to keep fuel etc. from creeping under the covering since it's almost impossible to get the covering to follow the weave of the glass, if any weave is visible.

Have fun:)

Sure do thank you for the reply Jim, I am planning to fiberglass the center section of the wing for strength, and then try to learn how to cover it with a plastic film.
 Again thanks...

That should be pretty easy.......let us know how it works out.

Which iron on are you using?

i have done several times on the R/C planes
first you better use resin finish, sand with 320 grit and completely vaccum
seal the edge of the covering as Jim told, low heat, but enough to anchor firmly
then, the best way to bond it properly is to use a heat gun and a soft cloth do press it over while the glue is active. i never use the sealing iron to seal over sheeted surface, only to seal the perimeter of the covering and then taut everything with the heat gun.
