Painting this plane for a friend. All dope and silkspan finish. After some sandpaper tests on small areas, i found 1500 grit was the best choice to wet sand flat and not leave a barrage of scratches in the clear.

Just saying, with sig moving or closing there will be no more Lite Coat, which i have become very fond of for the last 34 plus years.

BRODAK CLEAR IS PRETTY MUCH THE SAME AS LITE COAT....I USED IT ON SILK AND IT WOULDNT TIGHTEN UP UNTILL I USED SOME SIG SUPER COAT

I BELIEVE SIG AND BRODAK IS FROM RANDOLPH.......I PUT THE SIG OVER BRODAK WITH NO PROBLEM

Honestly because the dope is made by the same company does not mean it is the same formulation. I have never seen a can of Sig Lite Coat that is brown in color. Randolph is for full size aircraft. Sig, and Brodak is for model airplanes. I suspect Both brodak and Sig have double the colored pigment that Randolph has, based on my experience of the 3. Next time i have a quart of all three i will weigh them.

i'm not so sure about that, alongside Brodak I've been using actual Randolph labeled stuff quite a bit and coverage seems excellent.

I think we are the only group of people on earth that puts a mirror finish on tissue paper. Sanding and polishing over open bays? Gee Whiz.

Who knows. This is the first time i sprayed white, which happened to be Randolph without adding extra pigment. Im assuming the total thickness of paint on a full
size aircraft would be 5 or 6 times the thickness used on our models. So from that i would think we would need more pigment in our hobby dope.

The trick to spraying white is to have a light color base under it, and to put it on evenly and have just enough to cover. By the time you add the trim like you have done with this Banshee, it takes you eye away from any perceived flaws and brings it all together. And then the clear tops it off. I have seen many white models that i thought had some shadows or uneven spots but when the trim and other decorations were added, I couldn't see them. It doesn't have to look like a refrigerator to start out with!!

Thanks Dan. The surprising thing to me was after the all the white i sprayed on it, after drying it only picked up 1 oz. Not sure if youve seen Sparky's newest plane but you can see through the white paint when he holds it up to the light. Thanks for the tips.

Thanks for the kind comments Wayne. As for the Sig Lite Coat, even if everything else is equal, I have never had a can of Lite coat that had a brown tint in it, unlike Brodak and Randolf. Bill Byles also told me he had customers that wanted Sig Lite Coat used as a top coat on their full size aircraft. I found that a little but not much, surprising. I use all clear tinted dope on the under coats, and I like it. But never as a top coat. I dont think many fabric covered aircraft even bother with a clear topcoat. The color coats have more than enough Clear in them already.
