Dope HELP
« on: June 25, 2015, 08:26:06 PM »
Heya fellas.

Looking to possibly getting back into the sport and I see in the last couple years that Ive been away the prices shot up!

I will be building a few solid wing profile combat wings and not sure how to finish it...... Is there a new product that replaces dope?  Could I just use a iron and monokote type? Could I just use Rustoleum?

Ive been out the loop too long and looking to build on a tight budget.

Yes and yes.  Be sparing with the Rustoleum.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

You can cut costs a lot just buying Randolph brand dopes from Aircraft Spruce or other Homebuilt suppliers. Good stuff, quarts or gallons. Maybe you can pick it up and save on shipping at your local airport supply store? I'm partial to butyrate dope, because it's light and easy to repair on open framework wings, etc. If you build solid fuselages and sheeted foam wings, there are a lot more options, such as glass cloth with epoxy resin and epoxy paint, for example. It's way more durable, but I don't think anybody prefers the shine of epoxy over the shine of buffed clear dope topcoats.  :) Steve
