Derek,
WOW! This is going to be something! I can't wait to see more progress and color.
You elected to have a different look on the bottom. Is this common?
Great job!!

Can't speak for Derek but probably to save some sort of sanity...

What are you using for text and star? Are these some kinds of templates? How do you make them? Do you paint under them first then the rest of the plane or the other way around?

The material is called Stencil Mask and it is available at SignWarehouse.com. I have a Q130 vinyl plotter that I cut all my stencils with.
When it comes to painting I do both, I use the stencils as positive and negative mask. When I post pictures of the painted plane it will make more sense. Sometimes I paint a light color then put a mask over top of it, paint a dark color and pull the mask back off to reveal the light color.

In these pictures you will see that I sprayed some of the areas silver. After it dried I put a more stars over the silver. They will show through the blue in the end.
-
the blue is on.
-
Here it is with the blue finished, well except for the stab....
-
It looks like you sprayed blue right over the silver. Is there a reason or did I miss something?

To make the silver stars. The big star is white and the little stars are silver.
Derek
-
Just like the wingtip, the white is not sprayed over the blue the blue is sprayed over white and the letters were removed after to reveal the white beneath.

Derek,
Great job, excellent work! Kudos!
You're work is inspiring to say the least! Yes, I'm inspired!
At my age I don't think I have the ambition, any longer, to apply the effort, as you have, with your fine model. I think those days may be gone for me?
It's nice of you to share your abilities and answer questions, for the benefit of others, who may elect to learn and to take on a task like yours.
As you well know, the effort is worth every bit of it! Absolutely!
I can't wait to see the completed model!
Thanks again for sharing.
Charles

May be incorrect but I think this is similar to what Doug & Steve Moon call forward masking.
We do similar things, think of ways to use the least amount of paint.
It looks fantastic man I really can't wait to see it finished.
-
Derek,
You better hide. The White Coats are coming!
What some might miss is the incredible amount of pre-planning this takes. There is also quite a bit of additional hand masking.
The vinyl masks have opened up a new world.
I have done simple vinyl lettering with masks for the last 20 years. The last few years I am designing and cutting myself, and really enjoy doing more and more complicated masks for others too.
Derek, you have raised the bar. Now the White Coats are coming for me.
-
Thanks Tom and yes most of the masking is done by hand. Only the stars are masks.
Derek

I plan on getting the green on the nose today so maybe I will have more pictures soon.

Derek,
What brand paint and what kind? A great question!
Keep it up!

I can't wait to see this one buffed out. It looks sweet now, I can only imagine when you get it completed. Looks like front row material to me!!!
-
More green. ;D

The tape that i used to back mask the blue is still on the plane in these pics. That is why it looks a little funny right now.

Derek,
Even at this stage, the model looks really incredible! That green is great, works well, perfect choice.
Inspiration! Thanks for that.
I see you're painting your control surfaces separate. How are you holding them on?
Wow! What a Thread!
Charles

BEAUTIFUL DEREK!!! Can't wait to see the finished product!!
Can't wait to get home and paint my airplane!

Did a little more on the fuse this morning. ;D

Man, somebody's gotta review the BOM points... only 20 don't make justice to Derek's work. #^ #^

One more picture.
I guess I should figure out what to do on the bottom...
Derek

Just a reminder of Derek's "model" for his paint scheme.
Derek, will you use more green as on the real airplane, or will the bulk of the wings remain white? I think the lettering and AMA number will pop against the white. But it will also look great with greens. What was the bottom of the real airplane like? You must be getting tired of masking!
My "Impala" for Classic has been slowed down first by computer problems, and now by work on the more tedious items, like cowl and wheel pants. I will be posting more pictures in a few days.
-
Derek,
It just clicked! I see that photo with the "Matrix" in it.
You're the guy who took the award for the finish on your Matrix!
How many hours did you have in the finish of the Matrix?
What do you have so far with this model?
How are you holding your flaps on? ;D
Thanks and keep posting!

Hey Tom, yes the wings and stab will be green just like the real plane. I plan on doing the name and AMA# on the flaps with a technique similar to the SV on the rudder. I am pretty sure that the bottom of the real plane is the same as the top but I am going to do something different. Maybe some two tone green stripes or something. The masking is going fine, it is much easier than the Matrix...a lot easier.

The Matrix took about a year to paint. Not sure of how many hours were in it but I am sure that is was over 1000.
I will use hinges to hold the flaps and elevators on...

Derek,
I give you much credit for your investment in time with your models. Inspiring to say the least.
Yes, I see your hinge slots. Will you epoxy them in place or will your control surfaces be removable?
BTW. You're doing a great job matching colors to that scheme.

Thanks for the pic Tom, I was wondering about some green on the wings too.
This thing is going to look awesome when it's finished Derek, not just another "run of the mill" white plane with random colors slapped all over it like we see all too often. Very nice. y1

According to Realflight G6, that paint scheme has two green stripes (The darker green) on the bottom, with the lighter green on the bottom of the wing.
Hope your weight is coming out ok with all that paint.
-
Hey Matt,
I think the weight is on track. See if you can get me a pic of the bottom of the plane on Realflight. Thanks
Got the green base on the stab and elevators yesterday.

Thanks Jim.

I've always wondered what a blue/green combination would look like, never imagined it could be this absolutely gorgeous! Thanks, Derek! This is just scrumptious looking.

It is different and I like it.

STUNNING DEREK! I LOVE IT!!!!

I just love the fact that same guy with 2 conours plane hanging in the background also has a pink flower-power plane that he did for his little girl Layla hanging there too!
Keep at it Derek, looks great!

Eric, Matt, Will, Doc, Thanks guys for all the nice comments. I am glad that you like the plane as much as I do. The Matrix is cool but I just love the looks of this plane. I cannot wait to put it in the air!!!

I have a few ideas for the bottom. It will be mostly white.
Derek

Just noticed, how many unfinished planes do you have going? ???

Hey Doc,
That's how we do it. ;D

Looks like you still need the dark green on the top of the wing and tail surfaces. Mostly white on the bottom??? Looks like you are finally running out of steam.... I would be too.

Derek:
Do you spray a light coat of clear along the edge of your mask?
Hey Jim,
No, I spray only color. I do not use clear until the very end and it goes over everything. I have heard of the clear on the edge trick but it seems like it would build up a larger ridge that would have to be sanded out later. If I do get flashing I use an old AMA card to scrape it off. After a couple days of drying the flashing flakes right off and leaves a very crisp line...as you can see in the pictures. Hope this helps.

Yea, I like this one, too. A bit of black accent and you will be killer.

Randy,
If he added anymore, Derek would definitely be committed... He has already been heard singing... "There coming to take me away Hee Hee Ha Ha Ho Ho.. to the funny farm..."
-
The Green Hornet would be proud to be the pilot. H^^ LL~
Too nice. Modern art. H^^
Man, loved that show!!
Marcus

Little Buddy,
As you already know, I am definitely not worthy! I would love to be able to come up with a paint scheme somewhere close to what you do!
Can't wait to see what you come up with next, since I do know there will be a "next". ;D

He has yet to add the lace , shadowing to full extent, outline the trim and add the mythical panel lines, that everyone knows do not exist on real plans..... :-)
then he will get to the bottom ....
;D ;D ;D

Derek,

I think I am about 98% sure what I am going to do on the bottom. I have been busy lately and have not added anything since the last pictures. Maybe I can get some work done this weekend.
Derek

Better get into that buffing...........

Better get into that buffing...........
I have not done anything lately. I need to get back to work!!!
-
I have not done anything lately. I need to get back to work!!!
But you know, sometimes taking a break is a good idea.
I know that we have to do what we have to do to keep up with those bills, but my point is too much of anything isn't good.
I used to charge myself a lot about deadlines that you cannot really meet.
I wanted to spray some two part clear on a model this morning, 'cause I've been taking a break from building my Magnum, since the stab is not good to use, so I just took another plane and went for it and when I woke up today... no electricity!! LL~ LL~ LL~
Couldn't spray the clear, and now I don't know anymore when I'll get to do it.
I think when you work around the clock and still somehow manage to "find" time to do what we do, the deadline is the least of my worries.
Keep on flying!
Marcus

How close to clear is it now?

Same as in the pictures. I just ordered some more vinyl spray mask. I have a good idea for the bottom now.
I was thinking something like this!

Talk to PJ about tiger stripes. :)
Looks very good, Derek. I like it a lot.

All I see is someone sitting next to a 500LB beast............................ and looking at it - I'm sure THAT's too heavy to fly Stunt with also...
Sound farmiliar ?

Yikes. Look at the size of the paws!
I am not a Peta nut, but except in self defense, it is a shame to kill a beautiful animal like that.
BTW Peta stands for People Eating Tasty Animals (per Ted Nugent)

I think a tiger will fly with a PA 75. ;)

"I think a tiger will fly with a PA 75."......... or 2 or 3.

I want to see the finished product. As the guys on Fast 'n' Loud say, that plane is BadAss.

I finally did more work on the plane. y1
-
Derek,
I thought that you were burned out. Looking forward to seeing what else will be on the bottom.
-
Nice to see you're back at it...
Very cool!!
Marcus

Hey Little Buddy,
I am running out of vocabulary to express what I feel when I see your models. This one id totally awesome (as have been several of your recent builds!)
It is really fun to see what you do next, each time.

When he flew it upright, then upside-down, all that was left was a diagonal bunch of ones.
-
Really liking the silver on white! So far a cool bottom for sure!!
-
Derek,
I thought that you were burned out . . .
Ouch! Probably best to not use the words 'burned out' around the Barry family. Remember??? n1 n1 n1
-
Oops, sorry.
-
Its all good guys, most of those wounds have healed. Sometimes I remember something that was in the old shop and I miss it, but there is plenty of new stuff going on to keep me happy. I need to finish my niece's zebra striped plane....
Derek

The only problem with the Matrix is the weight. It flies ok but I wanted to build a lighter plane for this year.
Derek
-
It is always better build it light. Making it heavy 'after' is so easy. /smile/

I probably would be if I hadn't started what will be a 1-2 year home remodel project. I should have waited a couple more weeks to start it, I would be finished with the plane by now. I will have to take a break from the remodel and finish...

Just the white/silver on the bottom then or?

It's very cool but I still think it needs some black.

I agree that it could use some black, it would really POP against the bright colors. I am just at that point were you stand back and look at the plane and think...."it looks so good, if I add something that I don't like I would never be able to forgive myself.

Derek, do you ALWAYS have to show the rest of us up that badly? There's only one ship I have ever seen with a combination of unique color choices and design scheme that came close to this. And I ain't namin' it here! Wonderful job, very tasteful designing.
-
Derek,
I said it could use some black, not that it needed it. It looks very good right now.

Please don't help him it will be hard enough to compete with him as is.

Just an update. I weighed it yesterday, plane, flaps, and elevators are 34 oz. All that is left is clear so we will see how much that puts on. I have used up 5.3 oz of my 10 oz finish prediction.
