Derek,

WOW! This is going to be something! I can't wait to see more progress and color.

You elected to have a different look on the bottom. Is this common?

Great job!!

What are you using for text and star? Are these some kinds of templates? How do you make them? Do you paint under them first then the rest of the plane or the other way around?

The material is called Stencil Mask and it is available at SignWarehouse.com. I have a Q130 vinyl plotter that I cut all my stencils with.

When it comes to painting I do both, I use the stencils as positive and negative mask. When I post pictures of the painted plane it will make more sense. Sometimes I paint a light color then put a mask over top of it, paint a dark color and pull the mask back off to reveal the light color.

In these pictures you will see that I sprayed some of the areas silver. After it dried I put a more stars over the silver. They will show through the blue in the end.

It looks like you sprayed blue right over the silver. Is there a reason or did I miss something?

To make the silver stars. The big star is white and the little stars are silver.

Just like the wingtip, the white is not sprayed over the blue the blue is sprayed over white and the letters were removed after to reveal the white beneath.

Derek,

Great job, excellent work! Kudos!

You're work is inspiring to say the least! Yes, I'm inspired!

At my age I don't think I have the ambition, any longer, to apply the effort, as you have, with your fine model. I think those days may be gone for me?

It's nice of you to share your abilities and answer questions, for the benefit of others, who may elect to learn and to take on a task like yours.

As you well know, the effort is worth every bit of it! Absolutely!

I can't wait to see the completed model!

Thanks again for sharing.

May be incorrect but I think this is similar to what Doug & Steve Moon call forward masking.
We do similar things, think of ways to use the least amount of paint.

It looks fantastic man I really can't wait to see it finished.

Derek,
You better hide. The White Coats are coming!

What some might miss is the incredible amount of pre-planning  this takes. There is also quite a bit of additional hand masking.

The vinyl masks have opened up a new world.

I have done simple vinyl lettering with masks for the last 20 years. The last few years I am designing and cutting myself, and really enjoy doing more and more complicated masks for others too.

Derek, you have raised the bar.  Now the White Coats are coming for me.

Derek,

Even at this stage, the model looks really incredible! That green is great, works well, perfect choice.

Inspiration! Thanks for that.

I see you're painting your control surfaces separate. How are you holding them on?

Just a reminder of Derek's "model" for his paint scheme.

Derek, will you use more green as on the real airplane, or will the bulk of the wings remain white? I think the lettering and AMA number will pop against the white. But it will also look great with greens. What was the bottom of the real airplane like? You must be getting tired of masking!

My "Impala" for Classic has been slowed down first by computer problems, and now by work on the more tedious items, like cowl and wheel pants. I will be posting more  pictures in a few days.

Derek,

It just clicked! I see that photo with the "Matrix" in it.

You're the guy who took the award for the finish on your Matrix!

How many hours did you have in the finish of the Matrix?

What do you have so far with this model?

How are you holding your flaps on?  ;D

Hey Tom, yes the wings and stab will be green just like the real plane. I plan on doing the name and AMA# on the flaps with a technique similar to the SV on the rudder. I am pretty sure that the bottom of the real plane is the same as the top but I am going to do something different. Maybe some two tone green stripes or something. The masking is going fine, it is much easier than the Matrix...a lot easier.

The Matrix took about a year to paint. Not sure of how many hours were in it but I am sure that is was over 1000.

Derek,

I give you much credit for your investment in time with your models. Inspiring to say the least.

Yes, I see your hinge slots. Will you epoxy them in place or will your control surfaces be removable?

BTW. You're doing a great job matching colors to that scheme.

Thanks for the pic Tom, I was wondering about some green on the wings too.

This thing is going to look awesome when it's finished Derek, not just another "run of the mill" white plane with random colors slapped all over it like we see all too often. Very nice. y1

According to Realflight G6, that paint scheme has two green stripes (The darker green) on the bottom, with the lighter green on the bottom of the wing.

Hope your weight is coming out ok with all that paint.
