Painting nightmare
« on: September 12, 2010, 08:00:26 AM »
Ok where to  start, I usually cover my wings with $Kote and rattle can on the fuse this time I thought I'd use SLC on the wings and paint the whole model. I selected Krylon plastic white as it's supposed to go on plastic with no sanding or priming and Duplicolor Electric blue now I've had no problems using Duplicolor clear over Krylon so I didn't do a test big mistake when I applied the Duplicolr over the white on the fuse it bubbled and crackled all over the place I had to sand and reapply 4 times to get a half decent finish... Arrrg!  HB~> HB~> So on the wing I wasn't going to do that again so I bought Krylon blue and it went on perfect now I peel the tape off and guess what...ARRRGGG!!!  HB~> HB~> HB~> HB~> HB~> HB~> HB~> So that's it I'm buying trim sheet for the tail feathers and I'm never using Krylon plastic paint ever again!!!!

Yea, it looks like backmask time and reshoot the white. Just make sure you don't use a barrier between the tape and finish and only have a thin length of tape actually sticking to the paint. Not much fun.

Dwayne, i am pretty much a mono and rattle can guy myself. A couple of my findings are:  No more Duplicolor clear !! I only use Minwax spray polyurethane for my clear coats now.  Rustoleum is better than Krylon, Krylon will do if i must use it to get the colors i want as they have a lot more colors to choose from. Use adhesion promoter (i believe mine is Duplicolor bought at  Advance Auto) on slc and then rustoleum. Krylon plastic paint is great for painting plastic thingys around the house, just not my airplanes! My sequence for all the bare wood not being covered with mono is, use Elmers wood filler with a little water for a painted on slush to fill in imperfections and grain, lightly sand and then a good brushed coat of sanding sealer( i believe the best i found is Minwax),then light sanding, next a couple of coats of Rustoleum or Krylon and then wait at least 2 days and a couple of light coats of poly(i have not tried the water based). Hope this helps, Ray

Thanks for the input guys, like I said I'm never using plastic paint again!!!
Ray: Thanks for the minwax tip I'll give it a try.
Randy: I didn't want to take the chance of masking again so I brushed it in free hand and I think it blended well, so all in all I think it's coming along but man I never want to go through that again!!  n~ n~ HB~>
Thanks again

there is NO paint that will stick to SLC properly with some prep......always scuff the SLC - even withe a kitchen scratch pad - just to give the paint some key......i learnt this the hard way.

compatibility of paints is another issue - if you are using one type of paint for main colour - you should use the same paint for trim.....again - I learnt this the hard way !!!  now i ONLY use duplicolour from start to finish!

HEAT HEAT HEAT, a Monokote heat gun when removing masking tape, I never do it without heat anymore, its just too risky.
