Paint mask recommendations welcome.
« on: January 07, 2016, 12:18:14 PM »
Hi.

I am looking for a good quality stencil material, preferrably in 200mm/8" width that works with my Roland Stika plottercutter. I have a huge roll of green film that I ordered together with the cutter (from Oracover company).
It is very good for general work but in small stencils, like texts under 3/4" high, the smallest details like center parts of a's can get quite annoying, even with my watchmaker's patience.
So I'm looking for something thinner and with better glue.
The base in my model is painted with 2 component PU, so the surface is quite strong.

Cheers, Lauri

Thanks Mike.

Just to make sure; you use it as masking film that is removed after painting? L

what Mike says,,
I use it to cut on my CNC Cutter as well,, some manufactures will cut it to width for you ( I used to do that when I had my small Stika cutter as well) Now I just get standard 24" rolls for use,, it is a profesional paint mask that is available to anyone,,
one problem I had with my Stika in cutting small letters was getting the blade pressure and cutting speed right to allow the smallest cut radius,,
sometimes you can only go so small,,
I have heard some people cutting smaller text with a laser instead of a blade, it eliminates the blade drag which "lifts" the small center portions of text while cutting
For years the rat race had me going around in circles, Now I do it for fun!

Ihave never had problems with the cutting itself, I never cut things so small. The problems come when I start removing the extra bits, before applying the transfer film.
The 200mm width is not a big problem, I can cut it to smaller pieces by myself. L

Lauri,
I think that Mike put up the wrong link.  Go to Ordway Sign Supply and click on the MacTac logo.  The vinyl mask we use is the 8448 grey masking vinyl.  I've used it for years after trying all different kinds.  By far the MacTac product is superior.
