I was reading a thread about Allen's Olympus (I think on SSW) and he said that he used iron plastic on the flying surfaces and shot the whole plane with clear (catalyzed poly, I think). Anyway, it's wasn't clear (sorry for the pun) exactly what was used. How is this done? Do you have to rough up the iron-on first? Use steel wool on it or something. I can't imagine you'd get much of a bond otherwise.
Any information on the technique of shooting a clear coat over iron on?

I pulled this from a 2nd thread about the Olympus.
"Well, I have weighed the Olympus tonight. I gained two ounces using the Nason (DuPont) clear coat. I added one medium coat of the Nason and mixed as stated on the can."

Allan,
Yea, I got that part (went back an looked myself). It didn't' seem that there was any special surface prep except making sure it was clean. Something I may try.

I put the color trim on my Thunderbird flying surfaces (plastic) with stuff called "RC Colours" from a spray can (made in Belgium) It stuck fine and that's 3 years ago. Plastic wasn't Monokote but "suprcoat" or some such name.

I'm interested in this too, I've tried clear dope over film, but a single scratch and the dope comes off in sheets even if the film was roughed up. Sure looks good though.

RAndy,
I'm told it's because dope dries too hard. There would be no chemical bond, after all. I may try it on this current plane with catalyzed polyurethane, but probably not. I will try overlapping the clear I plan to shoot on the fuse over the edge of the plastic covering and see how that works.
