Substitute for Dupont Final Klean 3901S?
« on: September 30, 2019, 07:05:15 PM »
In the "Finishing and Painting Your Airplane" pamphlet from Brodak they suggest wiping down the model between coats with Dupont Final Klean 3901S.  I searched the web and discovered that Final Klean 3901S goes for roughly $75.00 a gallon.  I haven't been able to locate the cleaner Windy calls for in his finishing tapes, Sikkens M600, but I'm guessing that if it is still available it would cost about the same.

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced product to use between coats of dope to degrease and remove dirt and dust?

Thanks,

Most naphtha based products will work. Be careful and don't press down too much. Single stage urethanes are sensitive to it, but lacquers and enamels or 2 part poly-urethanes are fine.

Do they still sell Prepsol?  I think that's what it was called? Head to your nearest auto paint supply store and see what they have.

Randy, I just read that website you had in your post.   It was very helpful.

Yea, I bookmarked when I first read it. Lots of good info in there.

Good Luck.

I use Naphtha purchased from Lowes.  Never had a problem, even on polyurethane.  Best to use nitryl gloves, apply with a paper towel and dry with a fresh paper towel.  Wear nitryl gloves, it will dry your skin.  Works well on slimer airplanes for removing nasty oil residue as well >:D, in that case re-waxing is in order.
