New to me too Ty. What exactly is the "filler"?
-
Got it. But what was actually on the plane that you got from Tom? Clear and sterate, Brodak sanding sealer, or?
-
When you say "FILLER" if you really mean clear dope. Yes thats how I do it. I put 3 coats of clear down, light sand and then paper on top of the clear applied with thinned dope. #^

Thanks Ty. Definitely something to consider next time around. y1

I'll try it too...am going back to dope...am tired of the monokote process.

Way to go Gene, throw away the Monokote. ;D

Not sure I understand how this saves time. How many coats and sandings had Tom done when you got the plane from him. When you add those to the coats and sandings you will do after the paper application, it all seems about the same..
-
I used to do this but added sent free talc powder to my dope.

Ty,
When my dad bought Hans Pearson's original Pegasus, it had been built and covered with the exact method you describe. So, I guess that way of doing the finish isn't so new since that was July 1955. The plane was built in 1954.
If you want to see a picture of a pegasus, look in West Coast Model News during the late 50's up to the mid 60's
The co-designer Bob Raffel won just about every WAM contest he entered.

Hi Dwayne. The one big fault with talc, scented or not, is it is basically ROCK. It comes from soap stone and it is heavy. Corn starch and zinc strearate are virtually weightless by comparison. Corn starch is cheap and zinc stearate is expensive, by comparison. I went to a drug compounding store and purchased a 6 oz can of it and it will last me abut four years. That's how long the last can lasted. One heaping teaspoon per 4 oz of thinned clear dope. This stuff expands in the dope and goes a long way. H^^
Hey Ty...Corn starch now that's a good idea I've also read and I'm going to try on my next build, just before final sanding brush the entire model with 50/50 thinned white glue then sand it off and this is supposed to give a good base for painting, have you heard of this?
Thanks
Dwayne

The corn starch mixture is what I read from an article by George Aldrich. As to the 50/50 mixture of white glue/water, I believe that is for applying silkspan around the perimeter of the wing. I don't think it is for filling the balsa. I would hesitate in even trying it. FWIW D>K
Thanks for the input Ty but being the stubborn fool I am I'm going to give it a try but just on the flaps stabs and elev. the fuse will be done with .5 glass.
Thanks again
Dwayne
