What's a good method of removing masking tape adhesive from a paint finish?

Thanks,
Brew

On a butyrate dope finish I use WD-40. Sprayed onto a paper towel and wipe off the adhesive. Then clean the area thoroughly with window cleaner. Works great!  ;D

I have used Goo Gone, lighter fluid or plain naphtha, and some of the "orange" or citrus based spray cleaners will take it off. Depends on the tape and ho long it was on. I used to use WD-40 on metal and painted surfaces at work. And like Dennis says, use good mild detergent as a final cleaner.

Auto Tech (brand) Quick ‘n Easy Specialty Adhesive Remover

I have been using it for 25 plus years.  It stinks like xylene but is incredible stuff.  Have used it to remove all kinds of stickers.  This stuff is expensive but way better than WD.  I have never seen it damage any painted surface and have used it to remove all the stickers on several motorcycle gas tanks.  It is made for stickers on car paint, and I get it at an auto body paint supply store.  I have NOT used it on dope paint, so I don't know about that.  For all other surfaces, it is wonderful stuff.

PS:  If you don't want to buy a big jug of this, WD does work.  If you are going to paint over after removal, the stuff above does not leave greasy/oily residue.

Citrus room air freshener.   We used it all the time to remove gummy labels from appliances at work.  Won't hurt the paint.
