Thinking about saving some dough and possibly weight by no longer using a 2K urethane primer and instead trying the NAPA DC-540 .
Couple of questions :
1) Any issues with it over Randolph low-taut nitrate dope ?
2) Likely will apply white Dupont Chromaseal over it . I've used this stuff before, but only over 2K urethane primer. Any issues with it over NAPA DC-540 ?
3) Colors will be Dupont Basecoat followed by Dupont 2K Chroma Clear .
Thanks

I had some bubbling issues but not sure it is directly related to the primer. I now use 2 part auto primer. I use base coat clear coat auto paint.

I used it over base coats of butyrate dope that had set for several weeks. Then the automotive color was applied after sanding with 300 grit paper. Final coat was 2 part automotive clear. I am not a finisher so there are some rough spots to the feel.

I had no issue using over non taut nitrate.

I did one plane a year back with Nitrate initial then DC540 I think too soon... 2nd day and in a hurry first coat of the primer immediately crinkled up in several small spots....grrr on the remainder of the fuse I backed off a few inches and sprayed very lite coat, then a few minuets later a good wet coat..... and no problems
good news is, once DC 540 was good n dry the crinkly areas sanded down just fine
I am sure I put the DC540 on too wet over not well gassed off Dope

Ok. Thanks to all. Still need to know how it reacts with Dupont 2k sealer followed by Dupont base coat colors / 2k clear coat .

If in doubt try it on sample piece of work. I usually wait a couple of day for base coat of what ever to cure/dry/air out. Before putting color on I usually put a seal coat of clear. I was told one time not to put on heavy coats, go lightly with the paint until you get the layer you want to work.

I used it on my last plane without any issues using the 2K sealer or any of the other chromabase colors/paints.

Matt did you use basecoat auto paint for the color?

I used the 2K sealer that Frank was asking about on my last plane. It's an automotive sealcoat that I used as my basecoat on the last two airplanes. the Dupont Chromabase went over the sealer without issue

Has anyone used DC-540 as a filler/primer for a dope finish? I am using it for the first time and so far have been impressed. Not to the final color/clear stage of the finish yet though. 8)

Yes, quite a few of us have used it with dope with good results.

Great! and thanks. That is the answer I was hoping for. 8)
Update: Used it as a base for dope. It worked well over silkspan or fiberglass. However it did not adhere well over carbon fibre veil. Crinkled in places. Just going to live with that however use over CF is not recommended.

Just ordered a half dozen cans. I see that it is a Dupli-Color Product
Are guys re-coating right after it flashes off or waiting hours or longer for full cure and then scuffing each coat in between ?
Thanks

Just read up on product specs... and there it sez that it is a Sherwin-Williams product.

I used it on my current build. Looking pretty good so far. Ive been spraying, letting it dry for about 20 minutes, sand it off and dope on top of it with no issues.
Has anyone messed with the DC-541? Its a rust-colored primer of the same brand

Same for me regarding the drying time, DC540 dries very quickly. Depending on how picky I am about the project, I sand it off and recoat several times. I have not tried the 541, but I did try the Duplicolor brand white "sandable" primer hoping for good coverage with less of my white base color. I was hoping, even expecting it to be basically the same stuff.... BIG BIG BIG mistake. It ain't even close. It did dry just as fast, but was as hard as a rock and hardly sandable. I gave up after I ran out of elbow grease, and needless to say, I did not recoat it like I do with the 540.

I love the easy of it ( spray on 15-20 minutes later your sanding off.) What grit sand paper do you guys prefer and has anyone tried wet sanding to cut down on the dust factor ?

I wrap and pin a sheet of 320 grit 3M Sandblaster paper around one of the sponge type sanding pads from the paint section of Lowes. Then with a small Box-fan laying face down on top of an old bottle crate and an A/C filter on top, I sand over that. Go lightly until you begin to see the wood underneath the primer. All the dust is trapped in the filter and the sanding pad can be quickly and completely cleaned with a paintbrush for the next round of priming and sanding. DC 540 is really easy to use and plays well with dope or Lacquer. for the colors, I use rattlecan Duplicolor acrylic lacquer, "Perfect Match" auto paint from the auto parts store. It dries as fast as the DC and covers well with its adjustable nozzle which shoots a knife-edge triangular pattern, vertical or horizontal depending on your spray tip adjustment.
I thought DC stood for Duplicolor, but others say Sherwin Williams. Maybe they make it for Duplicolor.
