My secret weapon
« on: December 19, 2016, 10:02:44 PM »
This may be my weapon of choice for the stunt wars play ground in 2017 along with the B-25.  Larry Renger did it with Poly-span and SLC.   Now Phil C. may be upset as I didn't use SLC.  The main color is poly-ester material from Jo-Ann fabric store.   The covering is a mylar I got off the bay that was at a price I couldn't refuse.   The glue for the Poly-ester is Mod-Podge that I brushed on one coat straight from the bottle.   Monokote iron to attached the Poly-ester.   Shrunk the poly-ester as much as the iron would do it.  Then it was apply the mylar.  The stuff has a frosty look to it, but turns clear when it is heated to seal it to the surface you put it on.   May not show up good in the pictures, but it has a shine like I have never had with clear dope  or even auto motive 2 part clear.  All together I probably spent 8 hours on covering starting with trying to find where I had every thing stashed.  Did use the hot air gun on a couple of places after shrinking with the iron.   May show in the picture, but I did manage to burn a hole in one wing tip.  The hot air gun was to get 99% of the wrinkles out of the wing tips.  My poodle like the new type of finish over the dope smell. LL~ LL~  I have another application I'm going to try the mylar on.

First pic is one panel of poly put on,   Second pic is completed wing of poly attached.  The last two are results.  Seem the poly darkened on me a little but has a nice shine to it now.   May not be a 20 point finish, but I can't finish model planes.

Let us know how that Mod-Podge holds up. I did some testing with it and it didn't seem to hold nearly as well as nitrate dope. What did you use to stick the mylar on?

Izat a Zilch?

Looks great, but you need to fix the color balance on your camera! Or is it really orange?  LL~
Think S.M.A.L.L. y'all and, it's all good, CL, FF and RC!

It's supposed to be gold.  At least that is what the tag on the cloth bolt said.  You should the color now of the same material on my version of Wild Bill's Goldbrick.  Need to get that one flying again.

Says you can paint the glue side of the mylar. That would save some work and some weight.

IMO the eBay sellers film is probably just 1.5mil PGS or GS polyester lamination film.  PGS films are treated to receive ink and printing.  Not all lamination films are PGS, the labels will be marked as such.

PGS = Printable, Gluable, Stampable.
GS = Glueable, Stampable.

Yes, you can paint the adhesive side with transparent floral dye very easily and it will adhere just fine.  I did a plane like this last year.  As an experiment, I used the floral dye on the balsa as well.  Very lightweight.  The film I used is .75 mil and it is very light but also very tough.  I have a few thousand feet of the stuff...it should last several lifetimes!

This is my Trailblazer airplane before I installed the foam Gotcha wing.  It looked great.
