Title: Minwax
Post by: Neville Legg on September 06, 2009, 01:47:06 PM
I hear a lot about Minwax clear on this website, I assume its a Polyurethane? Its not available here in the UK, anyone know of an alternative here in the UK?
There are lots of so-called clear polyurethanes available here but most are not clear, but a brownish yellow!

Minwax is a brand name. They do make polyurethane 'varnish', wood stains, etc. The one product I've used for models was their "Polycrylic", a water based sort of 'varnish'. It stays clear, but isn't fuel proof. It doesn't smell even a little bit! Some use it for applying CF vail or silkspan for a finish base, but I think it would tend to be a bit heavy.  n1 Therefore, fugedaboudit!  y1 Steve

I thought that the polycrylic wasn't fuel proof! I've found a similar, in fact I think its the same product here in the UK, called Ronseal.
They do a water based polyurethane, but it looks like I'll have to use the oil based one for fuel proofer?

The Minwax is used for base coats in my usage.  It makes the wood a little harder on the surface.  Usually the second coat is all it needs before using a fill coat.  I have used the poly-urethane and poly-crylic.  Both water based materials.  I wouldn't think of using them for a top coat.  DOC Holliday
