Title: Lettering Tip from the Jive Combat Team
Post by: Howard Rush on March 06, 2022, 10:54:46 PM
People keep asking me if a hot Monokote iron will transfer 30-year-old press-on letters to an airplane without leaving a dent.  The letters don’t transfer and the iron leaves a dent.  Hope this helps.

I think the trick with old Letra-Sets is to heat them slowly for a period of time before applying them to soften them back up. Maybe tap the sheet to a window and expose them to sun light over a few days? I have not tried this in a long time. i don't know where you can even buy them any more??
   Type at you later,

I just found some on Amazon, but they didn't call them letra set or dry transfer letters, and now that I've told you that, I must confess I don't plan to make the 100 feet walk out to the shop to see what they did call them.  Something like "press in place" or some such thing.  Anyway, they are available yet. S?P

The ones I ordered came today.  They are vinyl stickers.  Yuck.

laser print on decal paper and use the water slide method, you can do anything with and go "wild" with lettering and drawings.

These I have are the old type similar to the letraset transfers.  I had to have them for custom bass so couldn't have the vinyl edge.
Here's the page I ordered from at Amazon:

Any reason to not just paint mask and spray?

I have a peculiar application, probably a dumb idea.

I used waterslide decals as you suggest for a while.

But I had a bit of trouble.  In some cases, too many after while, the decal got fused to the backing and refused to water slide.

I was using Crylon Crystal Clear as the water proofing spray.

Mine was and still is, an inkjet.

now there are modern sheets that you just print, cut , dip in water and slide, no need to add clear coat
not sure of brand names but pretty sure they are easy to find in USA

I have not found any that I would not coat first with something, even vinyl stickers.  Inkjet is very prone to smudging in the application process.  The coating also makes them easier to apply.

Laser is different.

this works but really needs laser printer, you can order printed, some companies do that on pro printers at low cost
crisp edges and solid color
