Latest Project Complete
« on: November 28, 2014, 09:31:36 AM »
I just finished my latest plane and it's ready to fly.  I used the DC 540 primer that Sparky recommends and I will definitely use it from now on.  It was easy to work with and I got a decent finish with Brodak dope.  It came out a bit heavier than I was shooting for, but the .46 LA should pull it through the pattern at 54 ounces.  I'm now waiting on some good weather to see if it flies.

Don,

Looks really nice! Wingspan?

How did you fuel proof the Brodak dope? Clear coat?

Thanks for the compliments gentlemen.  The wing span is 53 inches with equal wing panels and a 560 square inch area.  I have read a number of threads about tip weight for equal panels so I decided to start with 1.5 ounces.  After color, I sprayed 4 coats of Brodak Crystal Clear thinned 60% and the fifth was thinned 50%.  The finish came out better than my last plane and I still have a ways to go to catch up to all those "master builders", but I keep incorporating tips and techniques I get from this great site with each project.  Tight lines!

That thing is gorgeous!! I love scalloping and I really like the elegance of the way you scalloped this plane. I did my Oriental using silver as a base, no primer. This airplane is very light but I don't think I'l use the silver method again. I am going to use the DC540 everybody is so happy with. I literally sprayed on and sanded off so many coats of silver that I can't remember how many. At least a dozen, maybe more.

Those wings are a very interesting take on scalloping.  I like it.

As to weight, I'm flying a 53 ounce Fancherized Twister with an LA 46 in NBE (Near Bottom of Expert), and regularly getting over 500 points with it, and while I could do better with a better plane, it's not the plane's fault that I'm at the bottom of the Expert pile.  54 ounces with over 10% more wing area in a stiffer plane should work out fine.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

It is International Orange (BP 1016), but apparently it is no longer available since the Brodak color chart now shows that number as Sunset Orange which looks more like brown.  I may have had this can of paint for awhile.  Cruiser Orange is pretty close though.
