Title: Klass Kote Clear and Latex color coats
Post by: Fred Cronenwett on May 08, 2022, 08:27:53 PM
I have been doing experimental paint samples

One sample had this preparation:
1) Fiberglass cloth and finishing resin on balsa
2) Common hardware store primer in the rattle can
3) semi-gloss Latex House paint sprayed with an HVLP air gun (white and then Med Sea grey)
4) Inklines
5) Klass Kote clear
The klass Kote clear did not have any problems being on top of the latex house paint (I let it dry for 5 or more days)

I did one more sample just to compare to first sample
1) fiberglass cloth and finishing resin on balsa
2) Klass Kote White Primer
3) Klass Kote aluminum color coat
4) Klass kote clear coat (after applying vinyl decals and ink lines)
This was a full Klass Kote product paint sample just to see the differences if are any

The effort to use the Klass Kote white primer took more time and complicated matters. I didn't see any reason why not to use the rattle can primers since the setup and application is so much easier. Of course everything was sanded between coats so when the color coats went down they were as smooth as possible.

But yes you can put Klass Kote clear over Latex house paint. Latex house paint is not fuel proof but the Klass Kote clear makes the finished product fuel proof. And applying the white Latex paint did not give me any orange peel or other problems.

Hmm…, might be a good way to have a wide assortment of fuel resistant colors without having to invest a fortune in epoxy paint. Am considering this for a silkspan model. Thanks for sharing your experience.

That is why I looked into the basic primer, latex paint and Klass Kote clear approach. The rattle can primers work really well and so much easier for setup and apply. The Latex paints are available in lots of sources and you can have a color mixed to match a color chip of your choice. Home Depot and Lowes would rather mix a paint they have in their system but give then a color chip to scan and go from there. Bring a color chip or something flat that they put under the scanner.

Then the only epoxy paint I spray is the Klass Kote clear.... then it's fuel proof.
