I am wanting to paint a couple of models with Randolph Silver Butyrate dope.  Do I need to use a primer under it and if so whose?

I would use https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/cspages/g6303randofillbutyrate.php   Plus it's already silver.  Really shows any imperfections.

i think Randofil has more pigment than the silver color...the silver in both is aluminum powder,, i use clear dope and talcum powder for filler then use the silver to find the flaws.. you need to let the silver dry for  a couple of days before you can sand it because it will clog up the sandpaper

Primer is really nothing more than the old talc and dope routine to fill grain etc.  You can do that with just clear dope but I like the light vinyl spackle for that then a clear coat before covering.   Fix the wood,  fill the covering with dope,  wet sand it down and shoot the color.  In some cases I am not even using a covering-like flaps and elevators-to lessen the chance of warping later on.  The spackle on it's own is fine to just dope over.   In fact it probably helps to prevent warps.   Keep in mind you will sand away most all of it but what is down in the low spots and it seals the wood enough to where the dope doesn't soak down into the wood.  Less dope but more importantly it won't cause the wood to shrink or warp over time,  but stay in the original state.   The vinyl is impervious to most anything including thinner.

No, you dont need primer under silver. Stick to silver. Primer has its place but not in this volume.

I went nuts once and painted a PT 19 all silver, using Randy dope.. I highly suggest you spray five coats of clear over the silver, letting each coat dry 5 days. Being a metallic paint,it stays soft for a long time..PITA paint.. I avoid it as much as possible and never,ever use it as a primer again.
