Panel Lines on Monokote….possible ??
« on: May 16, 2013, 03:37:17 PM »

Because of health issues ( from restoring to many antique cars) I cover mostly in Monokote now.  After looking at many really superb finishes with panel lines, can panel lines be painted/inked on Monokote?    Ideas are most welcome, let's hear what you have in mind.

I'm currently only flying Electric stunt, so no fuel issues to deal with.

I have heard of guys cutting 1/64 grey and black monokote strips for panel lines, athough in my experience they tend to fall off, and would probably need to be overlaid with clear monokote if you didn't wanna have them all falling off in a few weeks.

I've seen that idea used a few times, can be made to work well. I'm really looking at a "painted or stripped line" to be applied for a more permanent effect....if possible.

In which case that's a little out of my depth.

Thinking about it, the biggest issue is going to be adhesion to the film, and then protecting it enough that you don't rub it off when cleaning it (even electrics need a clean once in a while!)

I have in the past toyed with the idea of using a beugler pin striping tool for trim lines and panel lines, which would mean you could possibly fill it with something that will stick to the monokote, but you may well be the first person to do so.

Here are a couple of photos of what has been done so far.  The paint mixture must be thin enough to flow through the pen, when it is , the lines go on fairly well.  Dry time is about two hours. After a couple days time normal cleaners will not take the paint off...yes thinner/acetone will remove it all.  As with most panel lines, it's a lot of work.

Let's hope it holds up through the up coming contest at Eugene.

Top Flite makes a "Panel Line Pen" specifically for that purpose. I have found it works well and is easy to use. 8)

Paint as Dave points out, can work pretty well, but you have to have paint that will stick to milar. You can ink it more conventionally (with a pen and ink designed for milar) then shoot catalyzed polyurethane over the Monocote like a clear top coat. That will stick.

Thanks for more ideas on the panel lines.  So far, after all the moving and handling that I put the Shark through at Eugene, the lines are still on and look solid.

Staedler pen company makes a series of permanent marking pens, see picture.  These pens are used to mark Cd's, vinyl's and Mylar items.  That was to be my next experiment.
