Gallon of Clear

I have a gallon of clear (Randolph) and am wondering what is a good way to pour it into smaller containers without spilling and making a mess?  The can is the same type of container house paint is sold (in at Lowe's or Home Depot, etc.).

I have in the past taken an awl, and punch about 3 or 4 holes in the groove on the can so after you pour it will drain back.
I have concerns about dope drying because we dont use it that fast, so now I use a different aproach
I make a "spout" out of 2 inch masking tape, tape across the lip with about three pieces then fold it back onto itself to give it some body. take your exacto and cut the excess inside the lip of the can. This blocks the groove in the can preventing you from getting any material down in there( which is why I used to punch holes so it would drain back) I normally end up with about half the lip of the can blocked out with tape, pour, and away you go....

Do not use empty paint cans from the paint store as they have an interior coating designed for waterbased latex paint.  Dope will disolve this stuff and your dope will be ruined.  Ask me how I know about this.

I use canning jars to store dope in.   Cut up Zip-Loc bags to seal the lid from the paint.    H^^

I also use canning jar but I found a source for plastic tops and they seal quite well. And besides, when I choosing colors it's a lot easier to see what you have.

I have used Mark's method for pouring from a can, but getting the gallon plastic pour spouts from Lowe's or Home Depot is a lot easier.

Buy your new empty paint cans from an automotive paint supply store - they are not coated as they are intended to be used with volatile solvent based paints.  I buy them by the case and they are not that expensive.  Also, I have been punching holes in the channel that the lid fits into for years and have some dope in my shop for restoration of full-scale antique/classic airplanes that is 20 years old that is still good & being used - both clears & colors.  It depends upon how the material is treated as it is used & how it is stored.

Here is my reply from elsewhere:

I use a very simple thing called a LADLE!

They are available in various sizes where kitchen implements are sold.

I also use glass containers with a wide mouth like from salsa. This results in mixing smaller amounts with the required thinner.

I make holes in the lips of metal cans as described by Bill Byles. A hammer and nail is great for this.

 Thanks Mark, that's pretty much what I had pictured. Seems to me like it wouldn't stick well to a previously used can with paint residue in the lip though. I suppose cleaning the area first would be key.

Wayne, the secret is, the lip never gets dirty cause its covered with tape, so there is no dirty lip for the tape to stick to,,

oh you mean you have a gallon that is already dirty,, tsk tskk, see what happens when you build so fast,  n1you get ahead of my great advice,, no slow down,, like me,, and the 109,,  y1


actually, it does stick just fine assuming the paint on the lip is dry

When I buy dope in the gallon cans, I usually buy a couple of gallons of thinner at the same time.  I save the empty thinner cans.  Now, when I get a new gallon of dope, I use a clean plastic funnel to transfer the contents to an empty thinner can.  The thinner can, of course, has the smaller screw cap so pouring small amount so dope from that can works very well.  Have been doing this for a couple of year with no problems at all.

I don't remember how long it has been, but I have actually gotten Randolph Clear Butyrate in a small lid gallon can like the thinner. ???
