Title: Flat or gloss paint?
Post by: RknRusty on January 01, 2014, 09:00:48 AM
I asked this in my silkspan thread, but thought I should re-post it since I want to finish finishing on my Yak-9.

I've always used gloss for every color coat and then a topcoat of clear. But after some reading over at Aeromaniacs, if I understand correctly, flat color will adhere better, weigh less, and be just as glassy after the clear coat. Is this true, or should at least the last coat of color be glossy too? I want this model to be glossy white with red stripes.
Thanks,

Rusty

If you are finishing with a clear coat, that should be enough to make it glossy.   With the automotive colors that I use they come out a kind of matte finish which the guy at the paint shop says should be sanded with fine sand paper so the clear will have something  to grip onto.  There are some better painters on here really to tell how it should be done, but this is my experience.
