Title: Finish of my QV
Post by: RC Storick on February 27, 2014, 12:25:10 AM
I started this plane 20 days ago and I am in the finishing stage now. First I block sanded all the wood with 320. I brushed 50-50 clear,3 coats then applied 00 silkspan over everything. I like to apply the fillets after the silspan is on. Then 3 more coats sanding with 320 between coats. Tomorrow I will post some pics of where I am at. I should be able to apply the base coats this weekend. I am shooting for a better finish on this plane. I have ordered gold leaf and I will show how this is done in this thread as well.

In my minds eye I have the paint laid out and it will be a unusual paint job. Predominate color is black and miss Ashley red with white strips and checks.

Have you ever done a model in black that had the paint blister when sitting in the sun? I've had it happen on anti-glare panels and trim. As much as I like all the different combinations that you can do with black, I have never done anything major because of the sun/blistering potential. I know you can keep it in the car or under cover, but in order to fly it you have to get it out sometime!

When I first finished my Parrott P-47 it was all black upper surfaces.  I was lucky that it never blistered during 3-4 years of flying.c

Was it luck or just not too much paint on the plane. If you load it down with 15 coats of black and not allow it to gas off it might blister. I'm willing to bet that it will be just fine. Wasn't Steve Busso's Zap machine black on top in many areas? Did it blister? Or how about his Fire Fox? Black with flames, How about Matt Newmans all black Stuka or a 1/2 dozen more I can think of.

I love black on planes but you better keep it covered. The black areas will get so hot that you cannot touch them with your bare hands and it will cause the paint to bubble. The Matrix has a lot of black on it and it was a pain to keep it cool, especially on the L-pad.

This is where it will get fun. Everything is done except sanding and painting. This came together very fast and I am quite pleased with the end product. To get to here was detailed in the opening thread.

I will from here sand with 1000 grit and apply a blocker coat of white. When I say blocker I mean mist not spray a cover coat. .It will be sanded again with 1000. Then where it will have the white stripes, apply a cover coat and back mask for the red back mask it all and then black. When I get the far I will post another photo. But for the next day its just detail sanding.

Remember this plane was scrap. Why I mention that is look around your shop and see if you have enough to build a almost free airplane.

This would be a good point to ask this question. Bob Arata has used a technique on a couple of his models that were white as a base coat. Looking to keep the finish simple and light, he thought of adding just a dash of white dope to the clear he was using for all the build up coats. The resultant "color" is more of a tint, and the extra coats that you are going to put on anyway, also do the job of blocking out what's underneath. Then when you are ready for color, you need just the barest minimum to col, pletely cover. As soon as I get to a point where I can do a dope build up and finish I want to try this. It would probably work with any color, and maybe eliminate any need for primer, except to use it to find low spots and imperfections for a better overall finish. I hope this makes sense. Bob used this on his Perky speed model and on his Tucker Special. He kept things to a real minimum and it is almost transparent, but is still white.

Another slick finish in the works. y1

I've been wondering, what's the old silver plane hanging on the wall?

Tom Warden Chipmunk. I keep it in his memory for inspiration.

That's funny, I was thinking Chipmunk but wasn't gonna say it because I didn't think the wingtips were quite there. That's way cool though, I've got certain stuff hanging around my shop for exactly the same reason. y1
Title: Finish of my QV I haven't done much

I haven't done much after my slip. Can't stand for long and can't sit for long but I did manage to put it all together to get a weight. The canvas is all white and ready for trim and clear. All up total weight before those two things is 58.5. Now the choice to make it front row and add a bunch of clear or just make it acceptable and have a good flying airplanes under 60 ounces. Hard choice.

Maybe some one is trying to tell you something.   I too can't stand or sit for any length of time as I get all stoved up.  Takes a few steps to get moving again.   Hopefully with my latest toy I can cure some of that.   By the way you may have to make a harness for your self to hang from the ceiling so you can keep working.  LL~ LL~  But, really take care of your self and follow orders from the doctors and nurses.   That is what they make the big bucks for.

So if you go for the front row, how many extra oz would it cost you ?

3 to 4 ounces. But everyone needs to remember when you add paint I might have to add Dumb Dumb to the nose. Adding weight to the nose gives the feeling I don't like.

Did I get lost somewhere? Wasn't this one going to be black with gold leaf?

Yep, just thought I might have missed something. Black and gold leaf sounded kind of "80's" anyway. Carry on... ;D

It is of the same family so it will have a RWB paint job like the rest with added things. I'm still planning gold leaf. Trust me the finish on this one is much better then my last years 18 pointer.

I agree.  One of the most beautiful paint schemes I've ever seen.
