Best Plastic covering
« on: September 27, 2011, 05:14:01 PM »
Okay, okay, I know this is the paint and finishing section but, I didn't know where to put this question. Who makes the best plastic iron-on covering and in particular, the best transparent covering.

I have been hearing rumours that Monokote has been having issues!!

That Hangar 9 Ultarcote is great stuff.  It is really fun to work with and I have had an airplane in the trunk of my car for a month and it still looks good.  No puckers or sags or bubbles.

Joseph has it right. Ultracote is the best I have found!

I use the one that has the specific colors a I want to use. Other than that the differences are minor. Ultracote shrinks more, but is a tad heavier than monokote per sq ft. Monokote uses high temps and is more graphic friendly. Monokote yields it's self better to Solid sheeted surfaces (out gasses less and weighs less) Ultrakote better at open airframes or wings (Stretchy and shrinks more) Either is good so long as you know how to work with the stuff. Novices in film would do best using Ultracote while for those with plenty of experience it really does not matter.

I just wish that either one of these companies would provide a sampler or swatch pack so I could see and compare all the colors against each other rather than having to buy entire rolls of the stuff on a guess. Note: Monokote gold is rather transparent, it shows through the base quite readily. Found this out the hard way after buying a roll of the stuff, would have been avoided has a sample pack been available. Not that the gold was bad, just had to avoid using it as a boundary color or over a non unifor color base.

I'd say Ultracoat. Although, my most recent iron on job used some stuff by Red Baron that worked OK. Both are better than the new Monokote.

I agree with the statements concerning Ultracote however, about a year ago I started using Sig Aerokote.  It was easy to apply and did not wrinkle or shift in the hot Florida sun.  Unfortunately, Sig has discontinued carrying this product.  I found the manufacturer of this product, World Models.  The product line is Toughlon and it can ordered from Airborne Models.  It is a good alternative to Ultracote at about one half the cost. Airborne Models website is http://airborne-models.com/html/productdetails.asp?ProductID=80

Wil be reporting on the pros and cons of the new monokote. I have the flat black, Metallic Charcoal Monokote, colors on order anlong with Carbon Fiber ultracote. These will be the base colors for the Pathfinder LE I am building. I am going to do a stylized futuristic military stealth look for this model. Still working out how to do subdued markings or should I even bother, but I figure I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. Too bad they don't make a transparent Smoke (Black) film, I could have used it on this project. (and, No, Window Tint Material will not cut it ;) )
