Stripping off Silkspan or Polyspan
« on: July 28, 2012, 03:04:32 PM »
Can someone explain a procedure to strip off silkspan or polyspan that was applied with dope and finished with colored dope.  I have tried peeling if off dry and using Acetone but there has to be a better way to make the covering turn loose from the wood so you can re sand and re cover.

Thanks

Mike

HI Mike,

The very best thing I have found (actually Aaron found it) is a product called "Dad's Stripper".  We got it at Wal Mart.  Once you get off everything that you need to, wipe everything down with Acetone or lacquer thinner.  It doesn't leave much residue, and is super easy to use!

I've had reasonable success using a heat gun, much like you were peeling off old stickers. It's not super fast, but it is kind to the airframe. No knife gouges, no smeared, dissolved paint.

I'm with Bill. I use Jasco stripper, but pretty much the same thing.
