Hi all. Looking at getting some more dope to finish my planes with. I searched the local hobby shops only to find the high prices of the stuff. So I got hold of a local aircraft supplier and got a good price on quart cans of Randolph Aero Products. So I am going to pick up a quart of butyrate dope, but have a question. I was offered Tautening, and Non-Tautening versions with minimal price difference. So my question is which would best be suited to using in my application. I am MAINLY building profile aircraft (profile fuselage and plank wing) with the odd built up one (full fuse built up wing going on the board soon. Anyways, I am looking for experiences and or help with which would better be suited to my needs. I am mostly considering the Tautening as it would be suited best to my needs, I believe. Thank you.

I only use "taunting" as first coat over open bays. Everything else gets non-taunting to keep parts from turning into pretzels. Taunting shrinks a lot.

ok so NOW I know why you have so much trouble with finish Randy,, you are taunting your dope,, while I admit,, when I taunt my Girlfriend,, she does tend to get rather taught,, but I would rather start out tautening my dope,, It seems to work better than speaking insulting jabs at it,,

So, if I get the non-taunting dope, I can still taunt it? Do I have to speak mean to it?

well I have had success by speaking gently,, but typically when I taunt it,, well, it usually ends in a pile of balsa splinters,,
come to think of it, that is how it always ends up,, maybe I need to practice,, taunting that is,,

I also see that I forgot to mention that I am only using the dope on 1/2a planes, if it makes a difference.

Ok, in all serious,, I poked at Randy enough,,
on sheet surfaces like the typical 1/2 a profile stuff,, then you definetly do NOT want shrinking dope in my experience,
the tautening dope will exasperate the tendancy for those wide thin sheets like the wings, to warp.
go with non tautening dope ,,

Randolph offers several different kinds of clear dope. Most are tinted either blue or tan and are offered in tautening and non tautening. What most modellers need to use is the A-1690 clear which is un-tinted and is the non tautening variety.
Non tautening dope still shrinks but about half as much as the tautening variety. I never use tautening dope in my finishes. All Randolph color dopes formulated using the non tautening variety.
