dope question
« on: December 07, 2015, 01:34:10 PM »
I'm low on tautening dope.  Can I fill the weave with non tautening and then switch to tautening and get decent results?  Keep in mind that for me, "finish" means that it's done.  Thanks

I would say a definate maybe,,

you MIGHT be able to cheat this by overreducing the clear dope, but it will take LOTS more coats ( wont leave more on the plane, )
by over reducing it you cause it to shrink out more, so you might get some tautening effect,,

best not use that nylon like the ringmaster,, just sayin

Russell,

Probably won't work well.  The tautening dope relies on penetrating the covering material so it will have a pliable coating to shrink with the dope.  Best to start with the tautening dope.  If you don't have enough tautening type then if the covering is pretty smooth as applied you may get away with using the non-tautening dope as it shrinks about 4% to 5%.  Tautening shrinks around 10% to 12% and shrinks sooner.

Thanks.  I'll use tautening until it's done or I run out, then switch.  Mark, that nylon went away, never to be used again for airplanes. The Ringmaster is also gone, salvaged for parts.

Bill planted it in the grass in Salem but it was fixable with minor effort.  I did think about fixing it but it was such of piece of fine workmanship that I decided to let it die peacefully.

Hi Russell,

I should have mentioned this in my first post: I do just the open bays with the tautening dope for the first 3 coats or so, & the rest of the airplane with the non-tautening dope.  That way it takes very little tautening type dope.  Tautening & non-tautening type dopes are completely compatible with each other (no doubt you already knew that but thought I'd throw it in.)

Thanks Bill.  I think I actually have enough on hand now.  I'll follow your advice.

Russell, the NWSR banquet is sometime in January...I might be able to arrange for a gallon of clear Randolph to attend the banquet, if you plan to attend again.  ;)  Steve

A gallon would probably last longer than I will.  I doubt I'll see you this January.
