Dope pulling away from plane
« on: March 21, 2019, 08:27:01 AM »
All,

I've been doping a profile fuselage for the past month or so. About six coats of nitrate, two of butyrate and filler. I let it sit for a couple of weeks to settle and painted it with some red colored SIG butyrate Dope.

When I cam back later that day the Red had pulled away from the wood in the corners between the rudder and fuselage and the doubles and the fuselage.

How can I correct this? More dope ? thinner?

Cyano on the rudder - slow set and carpenters glue on the doublers

Just don't try to fix this one with nitrate over the butyrate...bleck! That'll.leave a mess.

OK - so I'll sand the corners between the rudder and the doubler - then Tack them to get the dust off - then I'll wipe them off with some thinner - sound good ? oh - all butyrate

So I was thinking - if I cover the joints with an iron on covering - the one from Phil Cartier - that may also solve the issue

I'll try it and let you know what happens and how it looks

MC,
I think you need to start as Ty suggested by first sanding down the bubbles and get it smooth. Then hit it with primer sand smooth. Then do a coat of two to clear butyrate Sig lite coat (this is non-shrink). Then go to color with Sig butyrate (this is also non-shrink). In hard corners I use fillets (fuse/wing joints, stab/fuse, rudder/fuse. I like micro balloons and finishing resin mixed very thick.

Best,   DennisT

Dennis,

I've started down the path Ty suggested. I was just thinking aloud what might work as an alternative -   n~   :!
