MONOKOTE or Ultrakote over dope
« on: May 23, 2011, 08:08:45 PM »
Hi Guys,
I was thinking of covering my wings with monokote or ultrakote. Is this a problem if I already have two coats of clear 50% dope? Will the plastic still stick well? ???

Thanks,

-Danny H^^ H^^

It might bubble a little underneath on the solid wood parts.  The dope will soften though and it will stick
well otherwise.  The air won't be able to escape when the film is heated and shrinks.

Let the dope gas off for a couple of months.  Better yet get some Balsarite.  Brush it on and let it dry.  Now do your covering thing. H^^

You could use the Woodpecker tool on the solid wood and cover it. This wing was silkspanned and I covered over it with Ultrakote, two years no problems.

I beleive Tower Hobbies has a picture.  I went and got the picture off Tower site.  It is a wheel/spool with lots of sharp pointed teeth that perferate the wood.  I have one that was used once.  Did I say it has very sharp teeth? H^^

OK Guys,

So how do you all finish the wing joint between monokote wing and dope fuselage?
Does the dope cover the joint or does the film cover the dope ???

Thanks Guys! H^^

Make sure your wing to fuselage glue joint is bare wood !!!!! I usually then put in the fillets. I paint the fuselage and overlap about 1/8-1/4" onto the covered wing, roughing up that area with 400 grit paper just enough so the paint will stick but not go through the Ultrakote.

 Thanks leester,

I just finished covering the wing with brodak plastic covering. Wow, it really went well and I'm even impressed with my wing tips!! #^

Now I need to add the flaps and elevator and controls and I ready to fly y1
