I'm just about finished painting my new plane, and one thing both my grandfather and I noticed was there are black specks in the Miss Ashley red paint from Brodak. This is a new can and we've been filtering it out when we put the paint in the gun to go spray. Anybody have any ideas what it could be?

Sounds like something old changed or settled out in the paint. It doesnt sound like oxidation, or bad metal flake, I don't think that Ashley red has any other metal like lead? I know top flight luster cote red also will blacken over time even after its been applied. Personally, I'd chuck it and get some fresh paint.

Did you put it in a shaker?

Since you've been filtering the red before you put it into the spraygun, it tells me that there's crud in the spraygun, either corrosion or paint from a previous model that wasn't cleaned out thoroughly. Seems logical, anyway. :o Steve

for a lot of reasons I would be skeptical that there was black pigment in the red. Ashley red is pretty brite and I can't visualize the addition of black to "build" the color
I would , as Steve said, Look at the spray gun , dissasemble it, clean it,, check the strainer for contamination, check your air / water trap on the compressor,, then make sure you are not getting crud through the air lines, check the thinner,,,
that said, it is possible that there may be some black in the red,, but, only way to know is to try another color. Maybe spray out a test panel with white to see if it shows up in the sprayout to help troubleshoot..

The black specks were first noticed when we thinned the paint and shook it up. We always put it through a filter before putting it in the gun. This was the only color that had these specks. The silver orange and white did not have the specks

Hmm... odd. Maybe the tin can is giving it off? What does the underside of the lid look like? When you stir the can, can you reach the bottom with your stirrer and is there any black sediment on the bottom? Or if you store your cans upside down, you could pour it out and inspect the inside bottom of the can?

I have noticed little black specks in the Miss Ashley Red also. When I say little black specks, they are almost unnoticeable. Almost like a really fine grain. Seems like the light has to hit the surface just right to notice them. Don't know if this is what you are getting Matt, but I just went ahead and finished the plane.
I used different guns on each plane I used the color on, cleaned very well, and got the same results. I didn't worry to much about it, as I thought it was something that was used in the make up of the red color. Besides it looked pretty neat.
In really bright sun, on my two planes anyway, you can't see the specks. The shine on the red is to bright to see them.

Hi Larry,
What you describe sounds like what I had but it never made it to the plane because we filtered it out. It's still strange though because I never had this issue on my previous two airplanes, which also had Miss Ashley Red in them.

I had the same thing happen a couple years ago with Brodak Teal. Paint was thinned and strained, but had black flecks all over it.
