Auto air Wicked colors, other water based paints
« on: March 23, 2013, 10:50:52 AM »
Hey,

I saw some spectacular colors at the art shop yesterday. I've used auto air before and wasn't thrilled with its adhesion to dope.  Since the Wicked color product is the same company I would expect a similar issue. Has anyone come up with a way to create the substrate for our models and shoot water based paint?

I have a top coat solution I like it and I like the dope for the substrate.  The colors is where I'm frustrated.  Some companies used to make solvent based paints that could go over dope.  Not many of them are in production any more.

Anyone's have thoughts or ideas?

B

Bruce,,
in the auto industry, this calls for a sealer coat.
there are several out there, they are intentionally inert and nonreactive to the base-coat.
They are also formulated to promote adhesion with top coats. they also coincidentally eliminate the need for a "blocking coat"
I would explore those,,
there are many to choose from, what you are looking for is a sealer that states its acceptable over lacquer

I cannot think of the one I have used lately, I will see if I can find the numbers
the ONLY drawback is that you spray a coat on the entire airplane,, so that is a coat that does not contribute directly to color coats. But on the Avenger I think it only added 3/4 or one ounce  total, and the adhesion, color holdout, and stability of the topcoats made it well worth it to me

Bruce,
I used Auto Air Colors twice and with their sealer coat.  It is indeed a blocker and does help adhesion.  Weight builds up quickly though and I found it hard to get a clean tape line, not impossible, but it can be tricky.  The other problem I had was flashing inside the gun making color changes a bit nasty.  You think things are clean and spit!--- out comes a bugger of the wrong color.  There are some cool colors though, one of my favorites is "Porn Star Pink".  My first Shrike had some on it.  Some people have had good luck with it, but I opted out.
