Can I spray butyrate dope over decals. I have some very small graphics that make masking a problem for me. I wonder if I can have Kinkos print me some decals then transfer them to my dry butyrate finish and later lightly spray clear butyrate over the decals. Any advice is welcome. Thanks, Phil

To answer your question, yes. I have sprayed dope over water slide decals and peel-and -stick decals, Mylar and vinyl. Care must be taken with the first few coats, just fogged on and let dry completely so the dope doesn't melt the decal. After a few coats this way, the final heavier coats can be applied but let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next. If you have some scrap decals, practice on an older model or scrap piece of wood to find the range.

I think that decals that are printed on a laser printer might be more resistant to the butyrate dope than decals printed with ink jet. I have now had luck just fogging over the decals several times after they are on the model. Then slowly adding thicker coats.

I don't suppose I can brush Brodak crystal clear butyrate over water slides?

Thanks, Ty. I do have a small airbrush setup. Never was good with it.
Remember back in the day when there was something made by Pactra called Hot Fuel Proofer? It was for decals.
I wonder what that was?

I have a few bottles of Aero Gloss Decal Proofer. It will attack the decal equally. One brush and one pass until it dries or it will eat it.

Thanks, Ken. H^^

Had luck with my black and white decals that I printed on my laser printer. Just misted on clear butyrate with an air brush after applying decals. Maybe seven to ten light layers before thicker coat.

There ya' go Phil, that's how you do it. Not a big deal really, and laser printed deals are better because they don't need to be clear coated before application. Nice job!
