Title: Anybody try using peel away?

Hi All,

Has anyone tried using peel away to remove the finish on a plane.  Quick lowdown on what I'm trying to do.  There is another thread here where we were discussing our first plane.  We'll I still have my Jr. Ringmaster from when I was 8 years old finished in dope. If I can remember nitrate clear with base color nitrate and trim colors in butyrate, then cleared with Butyrate. Not sure about base color it may have been butyrate also. Anyway years later I sprayed with enamel paint cans and I would love to restore it to the original paint. It wasn't an award winning paint job, but it would be cool just too see it again. Free hand painted flames on the stab like dad had on his combat planes etc. S?P H^^

Hi Ty,

Thanks for responding Peel Away is a paint stripping system that claims you spread this emulsion type material and lay a paper product on it let set for a while and just peel it off.  I had used a similar product on some furniture and it work pretty good.  Of course in some adds they show it stripping down basically layer by layer.  I'm not a believer but was wondering if anyone had tried it.

If I should attempt this I will document it step by step to help someone else in the future.

Ply Away uses a hihly caustic (basic) paste.  Like a lye paste to strip the paint.

Don't get ANY on aluminum.

Not sure how it will treat balsa, but it is used on various wood for house work.
