2K - what to do between coats
« on: June 20, 2025, 01:32:32 PM »
Hi

Spraying 2K finishes like Oracolor or Klasskote.  Recommendations are often to wait a few hours between coats.  By then, the paint in the cup is potentially going off.  Mixing small amounts of 2K paint is a little impractical.  Sticking the entire gun/cup full of paint in the fridge isn’t popular with wifey and you then have to warm it up a bit to restart after a few hours.  Disconnecting the cup full of paint is messy.

What do you guys do between coats.  I go through the pain of stripping it all down/cleanig but its a right pain in the a@@.

Anyone got a magic fix I’m missing.

Mike

PS don’t say use dope 😀.  2K is pricey but dope in the UK is eye watering in price

Same questions as Mike! Looking for better ways than I have been using....

I have been using a small touch-up gun for KK paint. I generally try to cover in one coat, which is quite do-able with KK when thinned just right--except for yellow. The base has to be uniform, too, not just for yellow.

Otherwise, it is a "clean everything all the way" drill.  I have had issues with not getting the gun entirely clean and making future jobs waaaaay more frustrating unless each time paint goes thru it, it is cleaned immediately.

Hi Dave

I have a cunning plan for when the bl@@dy wind stops here in the UK (I can only spray when theres a reasonably light wind that carries the overspray out of the open garage door otherwise the wife goes nuts).

The plan involves a plastic pipette, a steady hand and a jar of jam.

I’ll ket you know how it goes.

Mike

PS.  I think thats where im going wrong, trying to get it all down in one coat in order to avoid the wait between coats.  I want to try doing it the KK recommended way.  Ive had good results so far but i know they could be better.

Mike, my technique with KlassKote has been to spray a dust coat, wait about 10-15 minutes (assuming you are painting at typical summer temperatures), and then lay down a thicker coat, which should flow out to a shiny finish. The paint stays in the cup/gun while I wait between the coats, with no ill effects. Once the thicker coat is applied, then yes, take the gun apart and clean immediately.
My main problem with KlassKote / Rustoleum (and other enamel) application has been with my inability to find/ create a dust-free environment. Enamels, unlike dope, take some time to dry to a tack-free state, and in the meantime act as wonderful dust collectors, which then shows up in the finish..

Mike,

You might also consider a trick that I have used--occasionally with success--of dropping a one- or two-ounce plastic measuring cup filled with the KK paint into the cup of the gun. If you are worried about it rattling around, you might cut out a ring of foam (polyethylene sheet, closed cell and cleanable) into the gun to position it. This works for me and keeps the depth of paint higher, longer and that seems to make the gun settings less sensitive until the end of the paint. The only issue with this method is that I have to remember not to tip the gun very much or it increases the mess.

Good luck with your experiments!

Dave

PS-- I agree with the dust coat that Mike A. is talking about. I guess I was thinking that was still one application, since I don't clean the gun in between.

PPS--I do not pretend to be a "finishing guy!" It is my least favorite part of any project!

Hi

I forgot to mention.  I’m also using Oracolor to match the Oracover film.  Its really the Oracolor that is the problem … its cures much faster than KK.  So really, its the Oracolor thats driving the issue.

Its bl**dy expensive stuff although very good.  Just less working time than KK.

Lol, when you buy a tin of Oracolor and open it up, its virtually empty.  It goes a long way with good coverage though.

I woukdn’t like to leave the gun lying around for an hour or so between coats with Oracolor for sure.
