Spraying Dope
« on: June 10, 2014, 09:03:35 PM »
I sprayed a coat of white and have several spots where the paint feels rough.  I had it thinned about 60/40 with a small amount of retarder in the last coat for humidity.  Is this a sign that I need to thin the mix more or adjust the pressure (spraying around 20-25lbs)?

Thanks,

James

It sounds like the it's too dry. Either thin it a bit more or open up the material screw a bit.

I agree with Randy, the dope was too dry.  I'd thin it at least 50/50 & depending on the temperature you can go to 60% thinner/40% dope.  Test the gun with the dope you are going to use on a piece of clean cardboart (side of a box, for instance) just do a quick squirt with the gun not moving & look at the pattern.  The pattern should be a long thin oval (thin at the top & bottom and thicker in the middle.)  Painters tend to say "if the pattern is right the pressure is right." If you are dealing with lots of humidity then a little retarder is OK, but make the retarder not more than 10% of the total thinner you use to thin the dope.  Retarder can be good up to a point, but some conditions are just outside of the envelope of the material you are using.

I agree with Randy and Bill (of course!).  The dope was too dry when it hit the surface.  More thinner alone might fix the problem, or you may need to open the needle a bit more.  It is easy to get the coats too dry when trying to get a light finish and dodge runs.  Getting the amount of fluid out of the gun, the right amount of thinner and the correct speed of moving the gun does take a good bit of practice!
