"CHINA" silk supplies
« on: September 06, 2008, 02:45:52 PM »
Just got my latest catalog from Thai Silks.  They have China silk in 5mm (the lightest grade) in several sizes, but all are white.
Typical:  36 X 36" at $2.40 (that's a square yard, folks!)
             54 X 54  at $5.35

Also, "Habotai" China silk by the yard:  6 mm (slightly heavier than the 5mm) It's 54" wide and goes for $4.40/yard.

All silks are very easy to dye any color, using RIT dyes.

They areat www.thaisilks.com  or 650 948-8611

Good folks to deal with. I ordered 10 yards of the 5 mm silk about 3 months ago, and they reminded me that I still had a credit balance from a prior order - - from over two years ago!

How do the Thai Silk materials compare to the old Esaki silk?  Shrinkage, weight, strength, etc.
Think S.M.A.L.L. y'all and, it's all good, CL, FF and RC!

Esaki = "epitome"  (Sort of like, "How do you say 'Michael Phelps' in Chinese? - - Cha-ching!' ")

The Thai silks must be stretched onto the framework, rather than just laid down neatly. The 5mm Thai sild is about the same weight as Esaki, but the weave is more open, and requires more dope to fill. The 8mm silk is a bit heavier, but has a much tighter weave, and therefore requires less dope (than the 5mm).

Esaki silk is still available from freeflight type suppliers.  It runs  $20-25 a yard.  Say you use $40 worth on an airplane.  Over a thousand flights that comes out to $00.04 per flight.   S?P

OMG! He talks about 1000 flights so casually! I think I may have had two planes get beyond 250 flights, and both of those were a lo-n-n-g time ago . . .

I'm envious, Jim.

The easiest way to get 1000 flights on an airplane is to quit keeping a log book. H^^  I have a number of yards of Esaki, some of which were $1.95. :o  So my average cost per yard is somewhat lower.

Another good source for China (Habotai) silk is Dharma Trading. They sell 5mm to 16mm wide goods. Plus the 5mm in 36" widths is available in rolls at 2.40 / yard for 11+ yards.
