Yves Fernandez, "SPECTRE"

Just this morning I was arranging magazines, I noticed the November 1982 issue had an article on the CL World Championships.

Flipping the pages, I came upon a model designed by, Yves Fernandez. A full construction article, color photos and all!

Really a nice design.

Possibly a consideration for my "bucket list."

Has anyone built this fine looking model?

I'll get a photo or two up.

Hi Captian

I built three of these (sort of)  Scaled it up 63" span; used my own design airfoil and moments. Kept the profile view


Built one in 1983, one 1984, one 1985. One is still in my attic the other two are still flying with other folks at the handle

Flew with ST 60 they were great planes. I was competitive locally and regionally in expert class.

Thanks for the complement.  The red one got 18 points at a NATS when it was still fairly new.

I must say that compaired to what the big guys do today my stuff is quite ordinary, but again thanks for the ego boost

I've always been taken with the Spectre, and eventually had to have a go at building one of these big ones.  A friend gave me some plans he made up about 30 years ago, and Charles was kind enough to send the article he mentions above.  This is the end result, about 55 oz with an Enya SS45 and Aeroproducts muffler (the original was 56 oz with an HP40). I haven't changed much.  The horizontal tail is a little bigger, out of arbitrary personal preference, and I've replaced the outer couple of inches of the flaps with trim tabs.  The Fernandez original had a really neat dual exhaust arrangement exiting beneath the rear of the cowl, but I decided that was beyond my capabilities! I'll also include a shot with an original Keilkraft Spectre..  Mine is powered by a PAW 19TBR diesel, and is a very really nice and capable flier in its own right.
