It's a miracle, right here in Western WA

Well, for the past 2 weeks, except for a couple of days when I had the nastiest stomach flu I've ever experienced (don't get this, I'm serious), I've been cleaning my shop and finishing the last bench (a combination down draft sanding bench and paint storage area) that I never got to when the shop was put in and the original benches were built. Always meant to, and finally did. Only took, what, 7 years?

Man, this went way beyond any normal sweep up the shop kind of thing. I filled my 20 gallon shop vac ... 4 times. Completely. When through 2 filters for the thing. I vacuumed the ceiling (18 feet to the ridge beam), I cleaned the blinds. Really cleaned them as in take them down and scrub them. I clean behind the benches. Washed windows. When through two boxes of these slick little dusters. Made not one but 2 trips to the dump with the pickup (full sized 3/4 ton) full to the brim. I tossed stuff that has been hanging around forever. The rule was, if I hadn't touched it since I moved into the shop, it went in the can or in storage. I actually scrubbed the floor. Sheesh! I wanted to post some pictures since I guarantee it will never be this clean again. Ever. It sort of echoes in there now. I have to wait for the floor to dry out completely to put the mats back down. It's cleaner than when I moved into to it. It's actually organized. <Randy shrieks>

Now, if I can just find stuff, I'll be happy.  I am beat.

You forgot to paint! Looks too clean to me and I see why it echos there. I would never let my shop look like that. A person could get a bad name for doing this. I can here it now. OMG!! I am so jealous!!  Wow that is awesome.  When I clean my shop, mine doubles as a garage, and put away all the "stuff" that clutters it up gets put away it isnt two days before something else gets stuck out there and clutter it all up again.

I love how you have your standing power tools on an island!  That is AWESOME and saves so much work bench space!!

Well, it won't be clean long, but I mean there was 2 inches of dust (to say nothing of an army of spiders) living in there. Makes doing a dust free finish a challenge. At least I got the bench done and the junk thrown away. That's something.

Clint, the shop is over my garage. So I suppose it's a sort of an attic. The garage is not attached to the house (about 70 feet away), so no complaints from the spousal unit about "smells".

I plan to lay up a couple of bellcranks today and do some machining on parts for the next plane, so I'll have a pile of chips and such on the floor soon enough. For awhile, I'm sure I'll clean after myself. We'll see how long that lasts. Probably goes back to my first job working in a restaurant. The boss was a "clean as you go" fanatic. Would take a tooth pick and scrap in the corners. Probably wore off on me.

Anyway Randy I'm jealous. You got your shop a major cleanup and I got mine only a little. But at least now I can walk thru it. You did a fantastic job on your shop.

Last time I did that, I did a lot of shop improvements, and wore myself out. Lapsed into a non-building era. It's due again, but maybe the end result will be better this time around.

Like Leo, I'm shocked that Randy hasn't painted the walls (pearl peach, maybe)  and hung some nice flowery curtains on the windows.   LL~ Steve

Yo guys. IT'S A SHOP!! The walls are just fine with me, though I could use a few posters of scantily clad women on the wall. I drew the line at taping and texturing. Lifting those 5/8" thick, 12' long, sheet rock boards up 17 feet in the air was enough for me. I do want to get the rubber mats back down but I have to wait till my son's home. Those suckers are heavy.

And Steve. Too late. I started a new plane today. I really need another classic plane.

Yea, I lived with what was a pretty dirty environment for a long time. You just have to admit you have a problem. That's the first step.   LL~

OK, so it's sort of messy (but not dirty) again. Started machining an adapter so I can use the Binks cup I was sent with the DeVilbiss gun. Sheesh, oh yea, the guy says, it will fit fine. The cup is 7/16-14 thread and the cup is M11x1. Yea that fits.

And I started laying out the new plane, laying up the bell crank and gear for it and choosing wood. Woo-Hoo, we're off an running again.

That place looks to immaculate even without paint on the walls and ceiling.  I managed to sweep up a sack full of stuff yesterday.  That was the path from the door to my chair.   Ready to shoot the primer on the Spitfire and make templates for the P-39.  Later,  DOC Holliday
