Title: You Slob!
Post by: Tom Niebuhr on October 08, 2006, 08:47:35 AM
"You Slob!" is the greeting that Dan Banjock and I created about 12 years ago to greet anyone flying "BiSlobs".

Since publishing the "BiSlob" in Flying Models it has become a national, and international disease. Bob Hunt told me that it was one of the best selling plans that FM ever had. I wish I was in the kit business before John Brodak asked for permission to make the kit. It's success is a great tribute to the designer, Ron Pavloer. I feel lucky that I had a part in it.

Since Elwyn posted this picture in the "Wingover" thread, I figured it is time to start another one on the "BiSlob".

I will post more "Slob" pictures, including some of Ron's, after I scan them.

Elwyn. who's "Slob" is in the picture?

I was talking to Fred K. the other day after flying my Bi-Slob, and mentioned to him that it might be fun to have a "Slob-A-Rama" event either at the Fermilab or TreeTown Contests.

Just thinking aloud, but the rules would be to impress Jim Renkar over a 4 minute period (now no indecent comments --please!). I put down 4 minutes because I can barely get a 5 minute flight on my Slob and a 4 oz tank (Fox 35). Any plane could be used, but perhaps -10 pts if more than 2 control lines are used.

That "Slob" belongs to Joe Gilbert. It's getting it's first flight following repair due to damage  incurred while trying to occupy the same airspace as Mike Donovan's "Slob"

Hhi Frank,

I am SO glad that you realized your affliction and have taken steps to correct the problem.  Admitting is the first step!  But......... there is really NO CURE for slobaholism......  it only gets worse and worse until your face takes on a silly grin permanently and you walk around muttering to yourself incessantly.!

Is there a "Slobberholics Anonymous" ?

Yes Bill,
I feel much better now that finally I've come out of the closet and admitted that I'm hooked on slobbin'. We do this duet thing John and I and we also do Slob-bat. Truly an excellent way to spend 3 or 4 minutes on a sunny fall afternoon. The slobs are a hit everywhere we take them.

No Kieth there is no "slobaholics annonymous" ...I think because people tend to notice them when they are 52 feet in the air making noise and spewing smoke. Ahh well..........I'm a slob and I'm proud.

Here is a picture of Fletch who suffered some Slob damage during a bout of slob-bat.

Hey John!!

Kieth -- get started by ordering an ARF Bi-Slob from Brodak and put a Fox .35 on it. Then just start flying it. The Slob isn't a one trick airplane and you can do a lot more neat tricks with it than just hover. At first try loops , lazy eights and the like. You'll have a load of fun!

Tom---I checked the events calendar but couldn't find the fish fry info. I'd seriously consider traveling to get to fly Slobs. Reply here with that info puleez.

Bill--do you got a Slob in your fleet?

There may not be a slobaholics annymous, but it looks like there may soon be a slobaholics UNANAMOUS.  You've convinced me to get out the one I've had framed up for four years and finish it this winter!

The old DOC here, I have two Slobs hanging in the basement.  Melvin of MBS Model Supply let me have two kits if I built one for him.  One has been flown several times with one mishap.  The other one is waiting on Melvin.  You should have seen the smile on John Benders face when he flew mine.   Of course he out flew me.  DOC Holliday

The best way to approach becoming a slobber is to fly the stunts you already knew.
After a couple flights the hover comes out of hiding from behind a tight , very tight inside loop.
The slob tricks come along all by themselves. They are hidden inside the tricks you already know.                                                                                                                                                                                quote from the "Book of Slob"

Maybe we should start something similar to the brotherhood of the ring like the guys have for the Ringmaster.  I thought of Slobberhood of the BI's but that could be taken differently and I wouldn't want to explain it to outsiders  **)  Maybe just Slobberhood would do.

Bill,
Perhaps at the Brodak event next year?  I have found that letting people fly the Slob turns them into Slobaholics as well.  One day we will all be walking around with a grin and muttering to ourselves about the Glory of the Slob.

Frank,

The fish fry is not an official event. It is a very social Dallas Club thing at the Gleason's house. They have room for 2 flying circles. No one is turned away, and there are generaly about 90 people attending. This includes wive, girlfriends, airplanes, musical instruments etc, etc. It is the greatest social event we have in Texas! We have had people from Texas, Arkansas. Missouri, California, Canada, Arizona, and more. No one is turned away. I have a guest coming from San Diego this year.

E-mail me your address and send you a flier.

Congratulations Leroy!! You did a nice job on your Slob -- she's very pretty.
I threw in a couple pix from Flint this weekend. Apparently we had the same ideas you guys did and we all went flying.

It would be cool to have a Bi-Slob fly-in.

We will most likely have to wait for spring, but it would be fun to have a low key Bi Slob event at the Air Zoo field. We would be guaranteed lots of spectators! Maybe a date late March or early April before all of the other events get going?

You Guys  y1 y1 will fly circles around me though. **) **) **)

Early spring would be great for a Slob Day. I'm sure Jihn would come up with me. Fletcher has a Slob and Jim Moreway is getting one.

Now that you have one---don't you wonder why you waited so long to get it?
Title: Re: You Slob!
Post by: Leroy Heikes on November 27, 2006, 07:33:32 AM
I wonder why ??? I left it sitting in its box since last Christmas when my wife gave it to me ~~> Now she thinks I only finished it so she would give me another airplane this year x:  That was not the idea, but I'll go along with it.
We will have to keep an eye on the weather come March and see how much snow is on the ground.
We are going to schedule a training day at the Air Zoo in May and let the kids have some handle time. We are going to build several of the Brodak Flite streak Trainers so we have a fleet of fairly easy to repair airplanes for the day. We have two so far will need to get a couple of more to make sure we have enough.

Bill,
You should build it now.  y1  y1  #^   #^
It builds quickly, probably while dope is drying ;-).
Go for it.
Dick A. brought two of his Slobs to P.Coopy's Fun Fly Saturday and asked me to fly two up with him after all the "normal" flying was finished.
Hadn't flown one in a few years, but had a ball, no fatalities! Simultaneous laps - upright and inverted, hovers, loops...............
When I got home I took mine off the wall and started getting it cleaned up to "Fly Again!".
