I recall seeing it somewhere billed as a Stirling.  It probably lacks the regenerator to make it a true Stirling cycle engine, but for a hobby engine, who's counting?

You are correct, a true Stirling (not sure of the spelling) is a closed loop system and this engine is not.  NASA is developing a power generator for a future moon base that uses a Stirling engine that gets its energy from a nuclear pile.  It's the perfect solution for the environment on the moon.

I have seen them on ebay for years.  You have to want one real bad to pay $600 for a kit.  Stirling engines are fun.
