New section added and rules. Please read
« on: July 25, 2013, 12:54:35 PM »
Some new forum rules (and some that have been on file but are now to be enforced):

It's okay to use a “handle” on your posts, but you must have your actual full name on your user profile. If you have something to contribute, please have the consideration and courage to put your name on it. If you don't do this, your posts will be deleted by the moderator.

We now have a “Debate” section on the forum. If you want to debate anything with anybody, please go there. Those who like to read about dissenting opinions can go to that section and enjoy the debate process. Please do not go into any of the existing special interest forums and start or perpetuate debates. The special interest forums are designed to exchange helpful information and to aid those who have an interest in a specific type of flying and/or building. Debates in these sections only serve to bring unnecessary tension into a cohesive group.

Please try to post only helpful and factual information. If you don't really know the answer to someone's question, don't add to the confusion by posting information that is not backed up by actual knowledge and use in practice. If your suggestion is predicated only on a “hunch,” please state that in writing so that someone does not take the information as fact and waste a lot of time and money following your hunches because they believe them to be substantiated facts.

Forums such as this one can be extremely helpful and entertaining when used properly. Let's all try to be considerate of each others opinions, ideas and solutions. Let's try especially hard to not cast aspersions on each others interests.

Is this supposed to apply to the main forum and engine forums? When somebody has a trimming problem or engine/motor run problem, we can only draw on our experience and suggest possible fixes. But we're not there, and it really comes down to "hunches" based on (often) inadequate information. We can ask for more information, but sometimes it never comes, and sometimes the OP gets testy over our requests for said info. FWIW.   H^^ Steve

I see people my age out there climbing mountains and zip lining and here I am feeling good about myself because I got my leg through my underwear without losing my balance

Could we discuss where the landing maneuver begins?  That should kill some time...

Hi Steve:

You are absolutely right, sometimes it does come down to a hunch. I think the directive is clear about that; just state that it's a hunch or a guess and everything will be okay. The worst thing is to say or write categorically that a hunch is a sure fix. Just add a line saying that, "This is my best guess with the given information." Or, "I can't guarantee that this will work, but you might try it as it might work." Or, "This has worked for me in the past in that situation." I think what is confusing is to instruct someone to do something with the inference that it is an absolute fix predicated on experience. We all know that there are dozens of variables to be considered in any trim or motor/engine run problem. Unless we are absolutely sure that our suggested fix will work, we should add the disclaimer that it is a hunch or best guess.

We need to remember that most of us who post are long-time modelers with a lot of experience. Note how many people are logged onto this forum at any given time and then cross reference those names to how many of them ever post. There are a lot of inexperienced people out there who are relying on us experienced modelers to give them accurate information. I believe that we all try our best to do that. However, sometimes we don't have all the facts, or misunderstand the questions asked. We should always preface our answers with a short disclaimer that our solutions may or may not work. It just preserves the integrity of the helper and the forum. Some may not agree with this, and that's fine, but I believe that it's a courtesy we should extend to those who are seeking help to let them know that we are trying our best to give accurate information, but it may or may not solve their problem. None of us have all the answers...

Well Sparky, This sounds good but does not seem to be enforced (as of yet - guess it may take some time).

It would be nice to also indicate where a member is located (at least in a general way) but I suppose that is not necessary.

Hi John,

Maybe a "little" clarification about "NAMES" in profiles.  There are two "profiles" for each member.  The information that "members" can see plus a Forum Profile that only moderators can see.  If the real name of the poster is found in the "Forum" information, it has always been my understanding that the rule has been met.

So, I can see the real name where you may not be able to.

Thanks!
Bill

Thanks Bill,

I understand now.

Too bad that some members want to hide behind a "handle" from all except the owner and moderators. I do recall that when I registered for Stunt Hanger (some time ago) Sparky sent me a forceful message to get my full name on my profile or be tossed off the site. I guess since then (or maybe before) some have slipped by that rule.
