Beautiful work on a truly pretty little airplane.  I"ve always admired the look of the Continental.  Your friend truly is a master finisher!

Thanks Marcus for showing it to us.

I’ll have to check my plans, but as I recall the Dmeco Continental was kitted in 1953. It could possibly be argued that it was flown before the end of ’52. This was done with the Black Tiger.  The Continental as a Classic suffers from the fact that it has OTS airfoil, moments and no flaps.  As a Classic it is noncompetitive. But it is a good looking, neat airplane and deserves to be built for fun at a minimum.

Uncle Mikey, do you have any input on this? Did Todd Lee fly it as a Classic?

i would like to thanks a lot Marcus for posting the plane, and all of you for the kind words!
the plane was cut from an outerzone plan, so i had to "guess" the ribs and formers to finish the plane
indeed the looks is so good that i could not resist to build one for the old time meeeting we´re gonna have next weekend!
the deviations are that i made a full removable cowl for the engine and shortened 1/2" the cheecks just for looks
will post more pictures when i finish final asembly
today i have completely sanded the clear for a flat finish and gave another shiny coat to avoid polishing later
wings are slc/sylkspan covered and painting is all automotive stuff
will keep you guys posted
all the best from Brazil

The date on the plans say 1955
I flew with Todd a lot when he had the Continental and he flew it in Classic. His and mine were quite fast and flew a lot like a Flight Streak. Very touchy controls. I used a Fox  .19 and .29  in mine. Todd had a .19 or .23  motor in his.   I flew them in the 1950's with Fox .35's in them

What size gas tank did you use as there isn't room for a tank for a 35 unless you cut into the wing. Even with the old pattern in classic you wouldn't have enough fuel? Thanks

Eddy,
Thanks, I hadn't had a chance to check on the date.  Definitely not OTS. The airplane is caught in no mans limbo. But it is still a neat little airplane that is on my list of airplanes to build. The Continental would be great for the .25 max stunt events.

I cut out the front of the wing. The Fox 19 and the 29-35 had the same crankcase holes mounting. So it was a easy motor switch.

I have a couple early Fox .25s that are almost new. I would think that any of the modern .20 or .25s would be fine. 3oz or 3.5 oz max should get through the modern pattern. Cutting into the wing leading edge is not a problem.

As I remember Dmeco referred to the Continental as "semi scale", but aside from catching the feel of an air racer, I don't know of any  racer that looked like it. But again it is a neat looking airplane.

What a nice job on the Continental!

I had fun flying mine, too. Thanks for the memories, Ed!

24 oz, old style Fox 19 w the three bolt back. No muffler. Fast, yes!

I finished this model in 1997, very near the end of my time in Florida. I actually left the model with Ron Sharpton who was flying buddies with Mr. deBolt. Ron got a signature on the model for me. Thank you Ron and Jim Catevenis for taking care of the model! It is a very special part of my shop and has some great times associated with it and all the X47 Flyers and assorted Florida stunt fliers that I was around during those years.

Fly Stunt,

Todd Lee

Todd,
Beautiful. I am glad to see really good pictures of your Continental. "Fast": how long were your lines, what size tank for the .19, and what prop.

Again, there should be more of these beautiful airplanes built.

Started with 58' eyelet to eyelet, it was not happy there so I went to 56'. Trust me, I like to fly slow, but..... This model dictated a faster lap time. Y&O 9-5, eventually trimmed 8 5/8 x 4.5. It let the 19 rev a bit since they do not run like a typical 35 stunt. Plus I needed the ground clearance! Three ounce tank was as much as I could get in there. I am typically reluctant to notching wing structure. This model was built in Classic fashion, i.e., fixed leadout and tip weight, plywood elev horn, cloth hinges. I even used a hardwood dowel for the elev hingeline, like shown on the plans. :-)

So having said that, there could be much more done with this model given all the kitchen sink adjustables.... But, I liked building it this way too. I could see another one with maybe a 20/25 FP/LA and make every effort to keep it light. Like we start every new stunter. Lol

Something about hearing that hard crackle of the unmuffled 19, tho. And the smell of burnt castor.  ;D

Nothing like the smell of castor!.......That's OUR boy!

Todd,
I never liked the Fox .19. The early Fox .25 runs and breaks just like it's big brother the Fox .35.
I cut into the leading edge of my Frisky Pete for more fuel capacity. It can be done with no loss of structural integrity.

The more I look at the Continental, the more I want to build one.
