The US team did pretty good today. My man Orestes won!!!!
I came in 10th, Howard 15th, and Steven in 24 in some pretty windy conditions at times.

Awesome, keep rolling.

That is almost always part of the story with WC events in Europe it seems like, really poor flying facilities. Makes you think you need a ship that is part airplane and part off road vehicle! I would think that a decent flying surface and facilities would be one of the requirements?

I assume scoring is from 1-10. The highest scores I saw from the top guys were a few 9.5s. A general judging comment, did the judges not see a single perfect maneuver, OR would they not know one of they saw it, OR, do they refuse to reward a perfect maneuver.

I don't think I've ever seen an absolutely perfect maneuver, although I've probably given 40 points a few times when I was being too generous.

There's always faults.  The difference is that the world class folks in their top form serve up faults in inches, while the rest of us serve them up in feet.

I don't think I've ever seen an absolutely perfect maneuver, although I've probably given 40 points a few times when I was being too generous.

I have seen a fair number of what I would consider perfect maneuvers while judging or coaching,  and have gotten a number of 40s of various maneuvers myself at times. This years NATS, for example, the one score sheet I saw (because I normally don't look at them) might have had a 40 point takeoff or inverted flight from both judges.

That is not to say anyone has mastered it, it was very rare that someone got perfect scores on the same maneuver on two consecutive flights.

There *lots* of mistakes in even the very best, championship-winning, flights. That does not preclude the possibility (and you have to be willing to give) a perfect score every now and then when you can't see an error.

Mike,
Your observation was interesting so looking over CIAM rules I found this:

C.5.3 National team for World and Continental Championships
a) For those categories that do not have separate Junior World and Continental Championships, a
national team may consist of a maximum of 5 individual competitors or 5 pairs of competitors for
each category, providing that at least one competitor (or pair) is Female and at least one is Junior;
and a Team Manager.

All Females and Juniors will compete for the overall individual classification. Additionally, there is a
Female classification and a Junior classification, both with FAI medals and diplomas.

Since the Juniors (and Females) are combined with the Seniors for flying, perhaps they consider this not to be separate championship.  Hopefully someone with a little more experience will chime in.

Confused by the scoreboard. Can anyone tell why some pilots have a 2 be round score posted but no first?

How about a quick tutorial on round structure, qualification and finals?  Thanks from someone not familiar with WC contest formats.

 Bruce

The word "round" is somewhat inaccurate, but that is the best word chosen.
They will fly 4 rounds. Rounds 1 and 3 will have the same set of judges  as will 2 and 4. The contestants final qualifying score will be the sum of the highest of the scores from round 1 and 3 and the highest score from rounds 2 and 4.

The top 15 move on to the finals. There it is the best 2 out of 3 flights for the finals score.

Simple, eh?
