I'm in an exhaustive, covid induced haze. Somebody put names with the people here. Back row tome looks like Joe Dayly, then Howard Rush, and then Orestez Hernandez? Do I have that correct? I do not know the young man kneeling in front? I don't remember anything about the team trials and too tired to look it up

Marilou and I made it here without serious incident. I’ll post stories of amusing incidents when I have time. Freeways now have KFC at some rest areas. Others have McDonald’s or Burger King.  Not all Poles wear American theme T-shirts this time. One had a Stones No Filter shirt.

The part about "even better" makes me question your hamburger expertize. Hopefully, they don't put sliced pickled beets on the burgers like the Aussies. Disgusting!  H^^ Steve

NO! Absolutely NOT! I forgot about that. "Pin-apple" doesn't belong on pizza, either. That's just silly.

Try some good spicy/garlic guacamole on your burger. Can be even better with bacon added, if it's good thin, crispy bacon. Thick, burnt, chewy bacon is right out! Don't forget the lettuce and slice of tomato. Messy, tho. Lots of napkins required!  y1 Steve

The US team is competing in the World Cup. Pretty windy today 10 to 15. Steven just fly is the current leader
On the board. However still very early in the round. They use electronic scoring which is pretty cool. Sorry for the reflection in the picture, I will try to do better.

Second round much better for me. Only a few mistakes.
You have to love the horizontal square = times 18. One of my highest maneuvers. Both Howard and Steven did better in the second round.

I wondered the same thing. Is that a practice circle? Or is that where the WC will be decided? Doesn't even look level, let alone smooth enough for precision takeoffs and landings.

Our guys are doing great, looks like a lock on the team competition and a good shot at overall win. Go USA!

What I understand is that the competition going on in Wloclawek, Poland (5 Aug - 7 Aug) is the World Cup series.  This is a competition through the year hosted by different countries.  It is held so that individuals can earn points to win the annual World Cup. It is different than the World Control Line Championships this year held in the same town from 8 Aug through 13 Aug.  The World Cup has a limited number of entries.

As far as I know, there is no "team competition" for the World Cup.  Also, I am not sure if the Chinese have ever entered the World Cup series of competition.

World Cup entry fills up usually in a few hours after the opening bell. Orestes and Dalys were on standby. There were no-shows, so we all got in.

Carl

The condition of the control line Aerobatics circles at the World Championships seem to be a continuing problem.  The photos above apparently show the flying circles being used for this competition in Wloclawek.  They appear to be in better condition than what our team encountered 7 years ago in Wloclawek.  The flying circles then would be put to shame by a cow pasture.  (Ask Kenny Stephens who lost his ship on his first practice flight there because his gear got entangled in the weeds on his take off.)

The FAI has rules for flying surfaces to be used for international competition including paved and grass circles.  It is interesting to read the FAI rules for grass circles:

"The standard required shall be better than that of a typical local sports field (a football field for example), and should be as close as possible to a high quality, level, well-tended and well-drained domestic lawn. The length of grass shall be kept to a maximum of 2.5 cm over the complete Contest Flight Circle during contest flying."

This is just one of the frustrating factors that F2B competitors face in these international competitions.

For those who might be interested, the FAI/CIAM rules for control line can be found at:

https://www.fai.org/sites/default/files/sc4_vol_f2_controlline_22.pdf

Thanks to Joe and Howard for the on-site reports. Thanks also to Fred for pointing out that we can click on the scores to see the breakdown from each judge. That makes it interesting.

What I would like to know is if there are any practice circles added. I was there in 2014 and I concur with Keith T about the sorry condition of the grass circles. Maybe this time the organizers arranged some off-site practice circles? That would be nice!

I assume scoring is from 1-10. The highest scores I saw from the top guys were a few 9.5s. A general judging comment, did the judges not see a single perfect maneuver, OR would they not know one of they saw it, OR, do they refuse to reward a perfect maneuver.

I do not know what practice facilities are being provided by the host at this World Championships.  (Maybe Howard can tell us about it when he has some free time.)  What I have witnessed in the past is that practice facilities is that they are not more than an afterthought, if that, by the host country.  At least, the FAI rules regarding practice circles at the World Championships  now address the matter.  Interesting reading:

"At World and Continental Championships and other limited international contests, organisers shall also provide Practice Circle/s. These shall be located at the contest site itself, but in any event shall not require more than 30 minutes of normal travelling time to reach from the contest site. Organisers should provide a minimum of one Practice Circle for every 50 registered contestants. All Practice Circles shall be freely open and available for use by all contestants for at least the duration of the contest, plus also for a suitable time before the start of the contest. All Practice Circles should be as close as possible to the standard and maintenance conditions set out at paragraphs a) and/or b) above; but except for the marking of the centre of the centre (pilots') circle and the outside diameter circle, the marking of circles as described at paragraph c) above shall not be required. ..."

So, the rules ask that at least on circle per 50 contestants.  That means that a contestant might be able to get on practice flight in one day.  In the past, our team members have often found other venues for practice, sometimes not too successful.

I was not there, but I will let Bob answer that one.  I think that he or the other team members lost some film in that exercise.
