Workbench Ideas
« on: January 01, 2008, 10:49:49 AM »
Happy New Year All
I'm gathering ideas on a new workbench. It will be used just for framing wings. I've settle on size of 8' long and 24" wide. I am looking at a metal frame(like warehouse racking)that I've seen at Lowe's and other places. I'm considering a countertop type work surface. This bench will be in my basement were the humidity is not only low but stable. I don't have any wing jig at this time ,but may in the future.Any thoughts ,comments or suggestions would be a big help.

Hi Steve....
I strongly suggest a THICK glass top....easily leveled and shimmed with playing cards, and clean up is a snap. Look at a commercial glass place for a shower door that they chipped in transit....

I would think that at the size of my bench that finding glass could be a problem. Also with leveling screws in a laminate top it can be leveled fairly easy. I've built several wings on shelving material from home centers, easy cleanup. I even drilled holes in one and used 90 degree brackets to hold the ribs vertical while the glue dried. For now I build without a jig, although I do have access to one(Adjusto jig), but haven't used it.

A solid core door makes a nice benchtop, esp. if topped with plate glass, like a coffee table top. I got mine within about 12' of its resting place, before I broke the corner off it. It's ok, didn't need that corner much anyway.
