Model aircraft transport/storage rack.
« on: June 04, 2017, 06:17:16 AM »
I know this has been discussed before but I wanted to show my version.
Made from 1 1/4 and 3/4 PVC pipe, it does a fine job.
The vertical spacing is 7 inches.
The padding is pipe insulation.
The first version had three tiers to fit in my Dodge Journey but when Harriet bought the new Chrysler Pacifica, I found that I could add another tier.
The elastic bands keep the planes from rocking during transport.
Of course, it can be tailored to fit any vehicle and it's quite inexpensive to build.
I hope this information helps someone.

Really nice... currently in the thought process of designing a PVC rack to hold 2 planes (ringmaster size) in the backseat of my little Ford Ranger until I can get a camper shell for the bed.

When I had my Ranger (7' bed) I had a middle deck where I could put airplanes below and airplanes on the top deck. Heavy flight boxes went below and the fragile airplanes that can be crushed by the flight box were on the top deck

If you put carpeting on the bottom you can slide bottom rack in and out of the bottom section. Pull the lower board out, load it up and then push it back in

  Hey Bob;
How wide did you make it? I think it helps to have a little extra width to allow staggering the stack a bit like it looks like you did. I have an '08 Chrysler Town and Country that I want to experiment with this style of rack. Right now, I have a rack that one wing rests on with the nose pointed down forming a sort of "X"  and put large models in the side doors. I can fit two or three in the middle part of the van that way where it is the widest. Smaller models can go in the back. Chrysler made the back end of these things smaller than the middle! Is the newer Pacifica the same size at the back hatch as it is in  the middle? It looks to be in your photos.
    Type at you later,

Your wife must be thrilled lol.

Are you kidding me? She is probably thrilled she gets to drive one of Bob's exotic super cars while he is off with the family minivan!   y1

That is practically what I am wanting to achieve once I can find an affordable camper shell.

If you end up doing the same trick with the metal beams and plywood use the steel beams and 3/4" plywood. I first used aluminum beams and they would bounce and creep under the weight.

Also you can screw things to the 3/4" plywood instead of going from below to screw items to the board. I first had aluminum and 1/4" plywood...then went to steel beams that were very stiff and 3/4" plywood. The beams were strong enough I could climb on top of the board it held no problems.
