Wing protectors?
« on: March 19, 2019, 06:55:12 PM »
Anyone using some kind of slip on wing protectors to keep fully sheeted wings from getting all dented up?  If so what are you using?

Hi Chris, Several years ago I saw Alan Brickhaus staple two sheets of poster board together for each wing and slip them over each wing. they worked for him may just be the thing for your needs!

I made some out of bubble wrap..
Cut to length of half span by just over 2 times the root chord. You can get fancy and taper them if your wing tapers. Then tape them together at the TE with the handy man's secret weapon, duct tape.

Works great.

And to add to Phil's suggestion, Allen put small paper clip hooks on the bottom, held in place with Paul's duct tape, then used a rubber band from one to the other to keep the covers on. That way you can make them fit loose enough to slide on easily, and then still stay in place. A velcro strap of some kind would work also.

   Type at you later,

I ave used rigid fan fold foam insulation.

pink or blue I build RC and indoor CL airplanes with it so it is in the shop

Use the the fold at the leading edge, trim the foam at the training edge and tape it.  It works very well.

Home depot has a nice durable bubble wrap stock that is used to isolate floor I think. It is color silver. Cut to size fold over and use a soldering iron to seal the edge. Glider guise use this a lot. The nice part is that it also keeps the sun from heating the stuff up too.

I saw somebody at Brodaks last year with that stuff, just didn't know where to get it at.  Thanks for sharing.

They sell 20" x 2m rolls at a Japanese store in my area called "Daiso" for $1.50 each!
I am one of the aforementioned "Glider guys" and just bought 10 rolls. For my DLG's and such.

Hey Guys, Actually you do not want to use wing protectors. Reason: hanger rash gives them that war weary look so cherished at appearance points time. Makes them look like real veterans. Gives them "character" like most of us. LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~

I can't even get it past the paint stage without denting it all up. Evertime I paint a new color it has a new dent, ding, puncture, cat claw mark....

Made 1 set for my P-40.

did not like them so will leave mine off the plane.

The foam insulation I got from HD I felt was too stiff.

The way I hang my planes from the lead outs with 1 of the line clips attached made the flaps push on the inner surface
of the insulation and I could see and feel the flaps in a mild twist inside.

So I will leave them off as I have always done and leave it at that.
