Speaking of weather

I suppose we in the northwest should count our blessings. Sounds as if the midwest is not having a fun time. The pic below is from Joplin, MO. Yeow!

I talked to my folks in Oklahoma and they say it's solid ice. We had floods, but it wasn't freezing at least.

We are in some of the strangest weather here, in history!  We are WAY below normal in rain fall (still in a deep drought).  Yet we have had numerous flooding situations!  It is 75* at almost 5:30 pm, and just last week it was in the 30s.

WE will be waiting for our ice storms this year.  it has been a couple of fairly easy winters as far as the usual ice storms, so I would say we are due.  We can  count on a few storms that knock out power for several days.  The Governor passed a bill a few years ago requiring the power companies to put all lines underground (or something similar!) but so far, it has been a slow process.  This came after an ice storm in January of 2000 that left people stranded and out of power of up to 10 days.  We were out for almost exactly 7 days to the minute.

Bill,

Yea, we had that here a few years ago. Ice storms that knocked out our power for most of 2 weeks. Yikes. That was fun. Lately, it's just been wind that has been the problem. Last winter we had 80 mph winds dust through and we lost power for about a week. I suspect I'm just going to have to cave in a buy a generator.

For several years my wife's parents lived in an area that was prone to have power outages.  Rather than buy a huge generator  my father-in-law got a small generator to power the deep freeze and refrigerator.  Often their power was out in warm or hot weather.  If it was cold they heated the house with a fireplace. During the power outages they cooked outside on the grill or the fish cooker.  My brother was without power for a few weeks after Katrina.  I think he gained weight.  He couldn't get to work so he began grilling and eating as the deep freeze thawed out over several days.

Right now reading this, I feel for those that are just south of me in Oklahoma, SE Kansas and Missouri.  The weather gauge right now shows 34 degrees after a day in the 20's.  Ice is all over every thing, but, so far we still have power.  The daughter is leaving for work now.  Right now it is not as bad as it was a few years ago when we had a freak snow storm in October.  Leaves were on the trees at the time.  We were without power for over a week.  Was farming out the family with relatives that still had power.  Going to work of a night and watching transformers blowing is not a pretty site.  I worked all night and would come home and help neighbors clean up downed trees and limbs.  It looked like a disaster area in the neighborhood.  Also driving up the street made you think you were in a canyon.  The guys/gals down south are not used to stuff like this.  I remember being in Oklahoma City when they had an ice storm in the middle of the week.  We had to wait for taxis to put chains on to get us back to the motel.  It could be worse.  MERRY CHRISTMAS,  DOC Holliday
